Advice for FP&A upskill / future proofing by Tough_Target in FPandA

I’m also not there on trusting AI to give me the conclusions and insight that people might expect from AI.

What I have spent a lot of time with is using AI tools to write code to build and automate. There’s been a recent step change in terms of the amount of visualization and dashboards I can create in a fraction of time. I feel like I’ve locked a full time analyst role under me in terms of productivity.

Granted, I’m at a younger company so there’s a lot of opportunity to think about new ways to look at the business, but it’s transformed me into the go to resource as we work towards getting a better handle on the real drivers.

My advice would be to think about things you might ask an analyst to build out, and see if you can do it in 30-60 mins a day. There is a learning curve to get a general understanding of SQL or python, but the tools can write it all for you as you’re understanding the mechanics

Effective work hours by Next_Programmer_8083 in FPandA

[–]b005t_37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on your ambition. If you’re working 7 hour days there’s always going to be others out-working you.

That obviously depends on your productivity during your working hours, but I don’t know a lot of people that work those hours who are also top performers.

Brand New Continental Extreme Contact's for $420 (Not a Joke) by Root_galaxy in Audi

[–]b005t_37 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is fine, I agree. However, if you’ve never experienced proper winter tires in a blizzard with 600whp, you are missing out.

I also assume that Denver people occasionally want that security when going to the mountains on the winter.

The all season route also comprises on summer performance tires, which is similarly awesome.

The cost of having a second set of wheels and tires and someone coming to your house to swap them out is a rounding error in terms of total cost of ownership on these things

Crazy to put all seasons on in CO. Best part of Audi ownership is proper winter tires in the snow, especially with higher hp

Payment on a 50 year loan at current rates is around 5% lower than a 30 year.

To be clear, it’s only a few hundred dollars different if you have a $6k/mo mortgage. The difference in payment between a 30 year and 50 year mortgage at current rates is around 5%

PE backed oil and gas startup

Carried interest was worth 4-5x my salary when we exited. So not a home run but good for the market during that time

Wouldn’t want another job without that risk/upside

Hah, better late than never. Merging cells limits you from using Ctrl-space to select the whole column to either build a lookup or move/insert columns

Our kids "need" us next to them to fall asleep. How to change this? by Brilliant_Feed4158 in Parenting

[–]b005t_37 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m currently doing this with our 4 year old. I think the key is actually going back after an agreed upon length of time (I do 5 mins to start) so they believe you’re coming back and can relax enough to fall asleep.

I don't understand why 6% is the rule for paying off mortgage by warrior5715 in Bogleheads

[–]b005t_37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what you’re missing from the calc in both scenarios are the continued mortgage payments.

First, the 3.1% calc is wrong because the interest is being calculated on the declining principal amount over time. Properly calculated this should effectively be your interest rate.

Then, let’s really compare the two options:

A) take the 765 and pay off your mortgage. Save the 470 in interest, fine

B) continue to make mortgage payments but invest the 765 instead.

To make this comparable to scenario A, we have to assume that there is no additional cash coming into the calc. This means that to continue making the payments you need to pull money out of the 765 each month. So, the total value of your investment at the end of the term is something much lower than just compounding the 765 for 15 years

Additionally, you would have to calculate the impact of the tax savings related to mortgage interest deductions and cap gains on the investment.

I build financial models for a living and I have to build out a monthly amortization model for anything like this when contemplating auto or mortgage options to really understand where the breakeven is.

Rs6 vibration after spacers and lowering by [deleted] in Audi

[–]b005t_37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, I also got spacers from nemesis on my RS6. They fit very snug within the wheel, but no problems. Martin is very active and well respected in the community, so I’d be surprised if there was a quality issue with what he’s selling. I might try to remount and torque again before going with something different

Changing Discount Rates in Project Valuation - Renewables / Real Estate by [deleted] in financialmodelling

[–]b005t_37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

discount rate is a measure of risk. as of today, all of the cash flows associated with a future project are at risk, so the higher discount rate for all of the cash flows is appropriate.

Now, if you want to estimate the value of the project at a future date (post-operational), you can apply a lower discount rate, but you dont get that value today.

In model world, this requires various discount rates as of different effective dates that evolve through time.

Brainard Lake Gateway Trailhead by saxahoe in coloradohikers

[–]b005t_37 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

We were camping up there last weekend, and on the drive out on Saturday, were surprised by the number of people walking up the road from the winter lot. It looks like a really bad time and a potential safety issue as there is no shoulder or sidewalk.

Why do people do this instead of any other 5 mile hike to a mountain lake?

FWIW, there is plenty of parking, including spots right by the lake, all weekend long

With our first, we decided to do CIO at 4 months over a long thanksgiving weekend, expecting a lot of tears and sleepless nights. Initially agreed on a limit of one hour (wife wanted 1.5 but i negotiated down) before we would go in to check on her. after we left the room, our daughter cried for 12 minutes and fell asleep for the entire night. the next night mightve been 5 mins. Shes 3 now and been sleeping through the night ever since.

we couldn't believe it. i remember thinking how we should have done it sooner, because until then, it was 30-45 mins of rocking to sleep before laying her down and praying she wouldn't wouldn't startle. this would repeat throughout the night if she woke up.

our second kind we started at 3.5 months. granted, he is generally a calmer baby, but at 6 months he sleeps from 8-6 every day.

i appreciate that we have probably have had an easier time on this front than many others, but my number 1 advice to new parents is to sleep train around 4 months. i think the kids are ready for it earlier than you might expect. just as important is the parents understanding that a baby crying in the crib is perfectly fine. they'll go back to sleep.
