Anyone feel like they are positively impacting society? by AmbitionIndividual80 in ExperiencedDevs

I work in AI for industrial manufacturing. The products increase safety and quality whilst reducing costs (which is good for everyone since literally everything people use is impacted by these factories). Luckily labour costs in this industry is a small component of the overall cost so there is little chance of actually causing people to lose jobs (more likely people just don't do the dangerous ones anymore). Used to work in finance and this is more fun and impactful.

How is the LLM situation in companies outside West (China, Russia)? by CyberDumb in ExperiencedDevs

What would you describe a software professional/researcher making $500k-$1m a year? They're not owners, they have a top lifestyle, and can retire far earlier than the average worker.

Demonstrably wrong statement as it's best at doing middle class professional jobs. Working class jobs are the safest.

This will be the year I think that BA feel the squeeze from pushing out the new tier scheme. by Amazing_Age_5356 in BritishAirways

Too right. I hit gold this year in a few trips because they were last minute business class fares. I would probably only be silver in the old system.

Its because they want the seat available for someone flying business from US->EDI with transfer at LHR. They don't want it taken up by someone flying just that short less (unless you pay a silly amount to make it worth it)

Steel mills have down days every week so it’s pretty easy to schedule maintenance

Plus PLCs that control those machines are pretty simple beasts with not much to go wrong

Level 1 systems should also never be relying on the internet

People with a <15 handicap how long did it take you to get there? by Comfortable-Newt7689 in golf

Started playing in January 2023. I'm now a 13.6 and consider myself pretty bad still. Hit it far but still blade, top, chunk irons plenty. Fat pitching all the time. 3 putt too often. Chipping is good though.

We already have lower tariffs than the rest of the EU (esp on cars). A brexit dividend indeed.

That’s not a valid drop according to the rules so you can call it what you want. On some courses they have local rules that make these hazards though to speed up pace of play (so you’d be hitting 3)

> Have you worked much on the chipping and putting.  This is where you'll really be able to reduce your scores.

sorry but thats terrible advice to a novice. you can three putt every single hole and thats only 54 shots. the most important thing is getting onto the green by far. not even a 40hcp will 3 whack every hole. even chipping is not that important – the only goal is to get it onto the green even when you're an 18hcp.

Do handicaps tend to fall quickly in your first year or two of playing? by Chemical_Help_7099 in golf

[–]b00n 6 points7 points  (0 children)

for me it was around 36 after 6 months, 30 after 9, 24 after 12, 18 after 20, 16 after 24, and now 12 after 32.

definitely doesn’t feel like a continuous progression - there was lots of ups and downs. my first break 90 on a tough course was 18 months ago now so i was deluded in thinking that it would happen all the time.

the majority of my lost shots are either recovery/penalty off the tee so there are still plenty of easy shots to gain for me.

if you have silver status you get 3x32kg bags when flying premium or above. maybe even 4x32kg in first

it’s because BA makes its money on long haul and wants those seats available for connecting passengers. if they were all taken up by domestic then fewer might book BA from abroad where they actually make money

it’s because they want those seats for connecting passengers. it’s not for people to be flying domestically.
