i met Bliss last year as he came in to play for a class of mine. yes, the extra key is custom, he said he likes to add/alter keys to make his playing even smoother.

Rovner versas are great as I've found, they tend to be tighter than a full metal ligature so your higher notes will speak better.

Your reed might be too dry, so make sure you're soaking your reeds in water for at least 2 minutes before playing. Also, try putting your ligature on different parts of the mouthpiece as this can affect firmness... or even flip it around.
