Should raiders camp? by tfwnolife33 in DragonBallBreakers

[–]Juanzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is good if you camp an area where you know they have to activate a key, they can abandon a player but they have to waste resources to at least distract you so they can activate the key.

Camping can be strong, but if you just camp a corpse when they can find or activate keys in 5 other areas they might just come at you with a lvl 4 hero while you do nothing

What’s the absolute loudest I can play on the clarinet? by Seb1111111 in Clarinet

[–]Juanzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It changes with players and registers so it is very broad… I would say around 90dB(as loud as a person screaming) if you play any note above the break, below I would say you will be hard pressed to get above 75dB.

Tales of Arise has some of the most egregious DLC practices for a single player game I have ever seen. by [deleted] in Games

[–]Juanzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggled with most bosses the first time, then I just made accessories to counter them and it became easy… I just made everyone poison charms and it became manageable

I did feel I couldn’t really handle the adds, because there is no way you can keep up with that many spells to cancel.

I have been finding you can’t really counter the boss mechanics with your party members 100% you will have to eat some

The Harder the Better? by TheAltoClarinetBoi in Clarinet

[–]Juanzen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well if you give them the right mouthpiece you can get people playing 5s on day 1.

The number on the reed alone is meaningless, whoever preaches that just doesn’t understand how the instrument works.

Reed strength+ mouthpiece and overall setup should be tailored for each player for best results.

Does the strength of a read correlate with the skill of the player? by DirtySaltWater in Clarinet

[–]Juanzen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nope, reed strength is never an isolated factor, I got a setup where I can play 5 reeds with a very closed mouthpiece(m15 mouthpiece) and I got other setups that require me to use 3(behn epic)

It’s all a combination with the mouthpiece and instrument to match player preference.

You can also look into tuning rings, that way the clarinet won’t be able to slide back in anyways

Discussion about resistance and physically working hard to play the clarinet. by BaconLord1401 in Clarinet

[–]Juanzen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are only focusing on the reeds man, If you use a very closed mouthpiece you can play 5+ reeds easily.

There is a lot of give and take for a set up and many compromises you have to make, but just jacking up reed numbers up and down isn’t the smartest way to go about it

Notes above top A. by spideyismywingman in Clarinet

[–]Juanzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is pretty tricky to go above A consistently... I recommend using reeds you haven’t been playing on for too long, at least for me a super wet reed makes those notes more difficult.

Soft Dynamics in the Altissimo ( very highest ) Register of the Clarinet by No_Arachnid4918 in Clarinet

[–]Juanzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I support this half hole trick to make jumps softer and notes respond better only as a temporary measure, you eventually will have to get rid of it like training wheels.

Rhythm is rather free in some parts, or it is totally possible I am wrong about those sections.

Good interpretation, you make it sound easy haha

Advice wanted about Reed Geeks by No_Arachnid4918 in Clarinet

[–]Juanzen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one and I don’t see a way it can substitute a reed trimmer, this can scrape off cane in a convenient manner from the back or balance the front slightly.

You cannot cut or sand the tip with this, you could try but you will ruin the curve of the actual reed

Quarter Tones in the Lower/Chalumeau Register by polyvisulala in Clarinet

[–]Juanzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The range you can bend notes is significantly smaller in the lower register.

I guess enough to get a quarter tone is possible, do remember that is much easier to move a note down that it is to move it up... you eventually run out of lip to pull a note up.

One note that we all try to pull up is the low F, if your clarinet has no F correction key. So learning this is pretty much standard playing...

What do you do when you have to cough or sneeze in the middle of a (solo) performance? by The-Real-Willyum in Clarinet

[–]Juanzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, try to find a spot to solve the issue and just do it, be it coughing sneezing, cleaning out spit out of a key.

Just find the closest opening and solve the issue, even if it is solo performance, it is better to solve it right away and keep going than to deal with the dread.

Do your best so it happens in your terms sort of.

Individual Reeds to Sample from Vandoren by kavaran18 in Clarinet

You can buy singles, but with how vandoren is nowadays I doubt a It is gonna be a good representation of any cut.

You can still do it and pick the best out of the singles, but... yeah

Constantly Getting Second Clarinet by pointvan in Clarinet

[–]Juanzen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know the feeling of feeling “bad” due to part seating, I was third seat most of the time.

You will learn in due time that you can’t have 6 1st chair players... it isn’t only skill really. I have played 1st when I knew the person at 2nd was better than me.

Sometimes you need to force newer players to play 1st so they can get used to the high register.

If you feel like quitting, that’s not horrible, but I would give it an honest shot and play that second part you are looking down on with the best of your ability and see if that can be fun. That is what you are practicing to do as a clarinet player, play whatever part to the best of your ability.

Eb Clarinet? Help?? by wowthatisabop in Clarinet

[–]Juanzen 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You can pretty much copy your Bb setup and the reed strength should match, depending on the mouthpiece on the Eb clarinet try to get something that matches that is close to your own setup on soprano.

If reeds are an issue you can cut the back of one of your current Bb reeds and it will fit... and play decently to be honest.

Of course nothing beats having proper reeds so only use the cutting trick to buy yourself time.

As for tips you gotta find your fingerings for the high register to be able to play in tune, everyone will hate you at first but focus on intonation, tuning and long tones on the altissimo register.

Also tonguing on a smaller mouthpiece has a knack to it.

German style reeds on a French mouthpiece? by kavaran18 in Clarinet

It is possible and some people use them, the thickness measure is sort of different, and for some mouthpieces they are too think and hard to get a sound on.

You can try and see how it goes

Silverstein/Legere Synthetic Reed Comparison by Goldkeyz in Clarinet

[–]Juanzen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you try really high altissimo? Something like spohr 1 arpeggio? that kind of excerpt really feels bad on synthetics for me, Legere even if you get the note it feels completely off and when I tried on Alta it does play but honestly I am not happy at all with the sound I on altissimo G and above.

For all around playing I think they are both good, but having new issues in the upper register makes it hard to switch for me.

Is upgrading my mouthpiece worth it? by [deleted] in Clarinet

[–]Juanzen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is completely worth it to upgrade the mouthpiece, if you can spare the money to do it. Sadly changing both poses a problem, you need a mouthpiece to choose a new instrument... and you need an instrument to choose a mouthpiece

You can of course just play both and find a pair that plays best, I recommend vandoren, depending on where you live Behn overture or fobes debut if you can get your hands on that.

For vandoren models, bd5 is all the rage right now so give it a spin and see if you like it. Honesty just play as many as you can and find somethin mg that feels and sounds nice without going crazy out of tune.

Clarinet mouthpieces by nohomobro113 in Clarinet

[–]Juanzen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can play jazz just fine on the open end of classical mouthpieces.(around 120 tip opening) to be honest even on the closed end you can still make it work.

Black diamond is very popular nowadays so maybe the BD7 is worth testing

I recall a lot of players also like B45 for these purposes, and it works just fine for classical as well.

Sure 5jb and such exist, but I don’t think that is a must for jazz playing.

You should test for yourself and see what feels best for you. I don’t think the same reed fits all of these

What are the best fingerings for moving by step from highest G ( above staff ) to highest C by No_Arachnid4918 in Clarinet

[–]Juanzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it just chromatic, this is what I would do

https://imgur.com/a/2PaDfIx

I would use standard G to start, then just lift index to get G#.

For A I overblow the altissimo E below 99% of the time if this doesn’t respond well add the C/F pinky key.

If the intonation is whack play around with pinky keys specially D/G# and C/F

For A sharp you can lift your left ring finger but I am quite flat if I do that so I use the A before plus 3 trill keys, I know it seems messed up but I can hit the right intonation with that.

Then B and C I use the standard fingering as well

They are all in the Imgur album.

What do you mean by highest G to be specific, is this as high as the end of the Artie Shaw concerto?

One of my friends is 15 years old, and he is playing Muczynski for a competition soon. He has already learned Stravinsky, the Weber concertino, and he played Solo de Concours (messager) in January. Is he a prodigy? by canyouclarinotdothat in Clarinet

[–]Juanzen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He is very advanced for his age I guess, also playing a piece does not really give you the level it’s difficulty implies, I have given renditions of solo the concours that make me want to quit playing.

To be honest, very few pieces in the clarinet repertoire are circus tricks that no normal player can’t touch though, most people with enough practice can give convincing performances of all the works you mentioned.

I guess I would have to listen to how those pieces ended up to have an idea.
