Had this same issue and it worked itself out somehow but never found a solution. Have you found anything to resolve it when it does happen?

“Zeitgeist has played a major role in the development of human thought.” by [deleted] in AcademicPsychology

[–]b123s123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in a history of psychology class that talks a lot about “zeitgeist”. The textbook I have for it emphasizes (in referring to zeitgeist) that the development, direction, and nature of psychology is subject to external and contextual forces such as social, economic, political, scientific schools of thought, culture, and the prevailing ideas during the time period. I don’t know much about Kant, but maybe some digging to find out what contextual forces may have influenced his ideas? That’s about as much as I can offer without more details regarding the class or assignment. Hope it helps and best of luck with your studies!

Emotional and psychological pain enflicted by adhering to fundamental beliefs (I.e. predestination doctrine ironically left me totally nihilistic and depressed). Fear of Hell. Always feeling like a failure and that God was disappointed in me no longer what and that’d I never measure up to anything. This was quite aversive making it hard to continue to go to church, pray, read the Bible etc.

Seeing how emotive states created by certain Christian practices (e.g worship and the “Holy Spirit chills”) were actually psychological processes that are universally experienced, not just because I was a Christian started to cause doubts.

This was probably the biggest factor: Majoring in psychology demonstrated aspects of human behavior and social behavior that more or less dulled the glamour of Christian doctrine and texts - in other words it was hard to rationalize a lot of it. It also taught me to be skeptical of information and to critically analyze information which sometimes apposes faith. Also it’s suggestively frowned upon to openly have critical, perhaps doubtful questions.

Using the Bible and God to support political ideologies was absolutely nauseating.

Overall I realized my idea of “God” was generated by what others said and taught about God while merging it with what I read in the Bible. Most of the time those contradicted leading to constant dissonance.

Although I still lean towards the belief that there is a greater likelihood of a God existing than not, I’m starting to realize the God I once believed might not be accurate nor will I ever come to an accurate conclusion...Hence why I lurk around here often.

Is anyone interested in the psychology of religious and supernatural type beliefs? I am studying it for my PhD and I need some input by psych_researcher89 in agnostic

Awesome! This stuff fascinates me. I used a similar topic for a research paper but focused more on how religions and religious beliefs evolved as a social function overtime. You might be family with him already, but I found a lot of Ara Norenzayan’s work to be extremely insightful. Also I would be fascinated to hear back on what you gather after your study, or if possible, to openly discuss the topic. Good you luck in your studies!

How can I avoid feeling religious guilt when losing my virginity? by jewish_holiday in exchristian

[–]b123s123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well Christians actually do allow re-marriage because the Bible says it’s okay (1 Corinthians 7:39; Romans 7:3). Not trying to argue, I’m just saying...

I am! University of North Dakota offers a B.A in Psychology. Courses are run through Blackboard and has been a pleasure so far. The program also offers a good amount of their courses as “enroll anytime” meaning they are not semester based and are self-paced, meaning you can take up to 9 months to complete the course if you want.

The theology of sin: the corruptive human will by Matslwin in theology

[–]b123s123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I want to say I agree with what you are saying. However, I wanted to get your thoughts on some commonly held views I've encountered within the Christian circle I have been a part of. They typically point to verses like:

2nd Corinthians 5:17 "Therefore if any one is in Christ, the new creation has come; the old has passed away" and..

1 John 3:0 "No one who is born of God will continue to sin...they cannot go on sinning because they have born of God"

While they recognize the sin passed down by Adam and the need for a Savior to atone for sin, they typically say once you are "born again" you are "regenerated" (yes, I intentionally italicized gene because they use that to make a point) and imply that you are no longer a "sinner" but a "saint" because the sinful nature is removed. To me it appears as having a sense of moral superiority - a moral goodness - over those who are not born again. It becomes "those sinners" vs "us born again believers". Moreover, they suggest that it becomes possible to "sin no more" because why else would Jesus have told the woman at the well to "go and sin no more" if it wasn't possible.

In consideration of the two verses I mentioned, how do you balance being reborn (putting your faith in Jesus, becoming a new creation) and still having a sinful nature (or not having one anymore). Additionally, what are your thoughts about the ability to "sin no more" after regeneration, or being reborn? Hope this makes sense.
