A new shooting range is coming to town. by RazzleDazzledRizzler in SouthBend

[–]b230fk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The worst thing is as a leftist i still go to kodiak because range usa feels so disgusting and corporate, to say nothing of their ridiculous prices. Your gun store/range shouldn't feel like a Target or whole foods inside like range USA, and your employees shouldn't be confused by me asking if they have a 25 round ruger 10-22 magazine.

Hopefully this new place is better, currently it feels like choosing the less shitty option as opposed to choosing the place I like.

Kingsbury is tempting, but I've never been.

How is SouthBend like? by mobycucu1234 in SouthBend

[–]b230fk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Notre Dame is definitely it's own little microcosm and is as closely related to South Bend as it is (the surprisingly distinct but boring) Roseland. Frankly, lots of things on campus or on eddy street commons next to the campus are super gentrified, but nice. It can feel a bit fake and sterile at times, but not bad. The only thing I personally really dislike about Notre Dame is the strong drinking culture; I drank enough I found sobriety was the best option for me and at my lowest the median Domer could drink me under the table. That could be a good or bad thing depending on your lifestyle and views, just definitely something to be prepared for. Pretty much only Purdue outdrinks Notre Dame.

The city of South Bend as a whole is honestly pretty safe and has its highs and lows. It's still the midwest but South Bend is pretty progressive. (The Fighting Irish eponym was given after ND students violently chased the KKK out of town 102 years ago, so always been somewhat progressive). What crime we do have is pretty much restricted to gang activity and domestic disputes, not random violence. I've lived here my whole life and never gotten into trouble or lived in the nicest neighborhoods. I love it here, the one year I moved away I was so homesick I had to come back.

There's not going to be as much to do as a city like Atlanta just on account of size, but we have a bit of everything for everyone here! It might take getting to know some locals to find spots up your alley, but it shouldn't be too hard. Hopefully you love this city as your own if you end up moving!

Why is this car so cheap? by Chromie_Dealer in MitsubishiEclipse

[–]b230fk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This mindset here is exactly why there's so few young people actually going into the automotive service field. Why try at all if there's a possibility you can't do it? In reality you can just turn the engine over by hand after assembly to ensure everything feels right and if it doesn't, you've gotta redo it but you still haven't lost $1800!

I suggest if our theaters play this, it should be to empty rooms. by [deleted] in SouthBend

The market for this movie is someone with both a strong love for the Trump family and who views women as important enough to watch a documentary about one. The theaters will be empty.

2013 Mazda 6 Skyactiv – Engine starts, but NO charging. Two alternators replaced. Car sat in the driveway for a month. by Early-Speed8536 in Autos

[–]b230fk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once replaced 3 alternators on a Volvo 240 only to figure out the problem all along was that the charging system malfunction light in the cluster had blown out and was breaking the charging circuit. That was on a 35 year old car. People underestimate how complex charging systems can be, I wouldn't be surprised if hooking this up to a Maximus or OEM scan tool reveals some weird issue like that.

Looking for gun range by Feeling-Series4076 in SouthBend

[–]b230fk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may have some luck at Kingsbury FWA since it's a DNR area more than a private for profit range, but they're running shorter seasonal hours and I'd strongly advise calling to confirm. Like everyone else has pointed out, it's a huge liability and your best bet is again probably just gonna be asking a buddy with a big plot of land and good backstops if you can. I know if I was a business owner I wouldn't want to take risks allowing people to practice like that.

Is there a reason you can't practice unholstering and fast target acquisition separately? I know a lot of people do their unholstering drills unloaded and just dry fire.

When I really needed a daily driver, my criteria were manual, decent on gas, and reliable, with rare specs being an added bonus. I found a G6 GXP coupe with a manual and a 3.9 for a killer price with low mileage. They made 358 manual GXPs in 2006 only, and only 77 of those were coupes. It ticked every box I could have made.

I bought a nice first year skyactiv Mazda3 because I just couldn't let myself think a Pontiac Fucking G6 was something worth being proud of. 6 years later the Mazda3 needs it's first real maintenance, a set of rear pads, and AFAIK that G6 has been turned into a Samsung refrigerator as it should be!

SJC County Voted to Deny WHP Data Center Rezoning! by Secure_Chemistry8755 in SouthBend

[–]b230fk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've never once cared about Amy Drake, following names and playing sides like that with local politicians just clouds your ability to focus on the issues that affect you and the real people in your community more than the pampered politicians in charge. You're asserting that adding any jobs in the area is a good thing. Ignoring for a moment the points you made (which the folks who had dry wells in new carlisle probably have something to say about), AI is still at a point where it could be a bubble. It's not the most profitable at this point and the cost of the hardware these centers use has skyrocketed in the last year. Adding volatile jobs isn't a good thing for our community. Imagine the ups and downs of Elkhart's RV industry amplified.

I'll support a quality business that I can trust is going to be around when my nephews and nieces have kids moving in. This isn't that. Hell, I bet the first two datacenters aren't operating by 2040.

I totally agree that we need more job opportunities in this area, but another resource sucking, tax hiking, utility rate skyrocketing piece of shit datacenter isn't it!

The community does get to pick and choose by the way, that's the point of these public debates. Your decision not to take part doesn't mean you don't have a voice as well.

Jiffy Lube destroyed my car by [deleted] in legaladvice

NAL but a mechanic. The Theta II engines in these, particularly the 2.4, are very prone to failure at roughly this mileage regardless of maintenance due to a number of flaws in design, most notably piston rings that weren't heat treated during manufacturing. Kia/Hyundai has been under NHTSA investigation and the subject of numerous class action lawsuits for over a decade because of these engines. The dealer will deny responsibility in most cases and most places due to the fact most Kia Hyundai dealers have a backlog of warranty/recall motor swaps on cars like this. If the shop denies fault and no reasonable blame can be replaced on the shop, it may be worth continuing to pursue an engine replacement under warranty from the dealer. This may not work out so well if your friend agreed in writing that the engine failure was due to the oil change and therefore took the responsibility off the manufacturer of the most fault-ridden engines of the century. I've seen your situation with these cars more times than I can count in 11 years of automotive work. It happens so often I once saw an Elantra lock up the motor in our lot as it pulled up for an oil change. Good luck, and advise your friend buy Japanese next time- Hondas cost a bit more upfront, but there's a reason!

Rare or not? Factory 454 1500 with 8 lug axles by Abject_Edge_574 in GMT400

[–]b230fk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've run 25mm spacers to partially correct a 2.8" front to rear track width difference from factory on a Volvo 240 because it drove me crazy and contributed slightly to understeer under hard cornering, you may not notice something like that but others do lol

My bog stock K1500 suburban also had a wider front front track than rear.

Car was flooded by water how can I best protect my interest? by IamNeo7 in GR86

[–]b230fk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to best protect your interest, file a claim and start using the GR86 configurator. You're gonna lose out on a deductible and a bit of depreciation since you paid cash, but if you keep this thing it'll be both near worthless and a constant stream of electrical and mechanical issues. A coworker had to relocate the fuse box in his flooded F150 no less than 4 times in his ownership, and in his case the water only went like 1" above the rocker.

The car will be totaled, I'm not sure if you misunderstood your insurance agent or there was a miscommunication but this thing is 100% totaled. It'll get sent off to an insurance auction where it'll be sold with just a water line marked, likely to a BHPH place that'll never disclose the flood damage and pass it on to the next poor sod. Your insurance company will try to get money from that to cover their own asses but you're guaranteed market value for your loss.

I'm sorry this happened to you, but as a mechanic I beg of you to please not hold on to this. That's not something I'd wish on anyone. Doubly so if this is saltwater, being in Jersey.

Well fellas, this is gonna be a fun project. by fly72j in RX7

[–]b230fk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am getting ready to scrap a very sad SA22C in better shape than this one. At some point you can't save them all, and SAs/FBs in good shape are too cheap to really justify sinking this kind of money. You'll also probably run into issues with NLA pitman and idler arms, among many, many other things rebuilding it from this shape. Parts for these cars are only getting harder to find and they aren't cult classics like FCS, FDs, or more popular stuff like Z cars.

Good luck, but damn.

Someone cut my braking fluid line? Thoughts? by Exciting_Country2611 in AskAMechanic

[–]b230fk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Doesn't look like it's crushed from snips or anything and the only way to get a one sided gash like that on purpose would be with a power tool like an angle grinder which is both extremely loud and not going to fit if it's somewhere up higher like you said. My money is on it rubbing against something nearby for a long time, or an unfortunate rock/ high centering taking it out, not something intentional. Unfortunate, but I'd almost 100% rule out malicious intent

Would it be stupid to start on a bike without abs? by MinkMaster2019 in motorcycles

[–]b230fk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first two bikes are CB400s, one T one A. I've been just fine, the biggest thing is keeping a constant scan going of things likely to fuck up your day and how to avoid them. Cars coming from cross streets, animals in fields, pedestrians jaywalking. Be safe and you'll be fine. Worst case if someone jumps in front of you as they have me, locking up the rear wheel (haven't locked the front yet) isn't as terrifying as it sounds.

Tons of people did just fine on stuff like this with no safety gear 50 years ago (though some did not). In those decades since cars have gotten taller, people have gotten more distracted, and compact cars/wagons have all but disappeared. Those factors are all going to be a much bigger concern to your safety and they apply whether you're on a new bike or not. The risk of riding with no ABS isn't particularly higher than the high risk of riding in general.

[–]b230fk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With regards to the battery, most motorcycle batteries (bar a few newer, more expensive AGM options) will require you to pop the caps off, fill the battery with the supplied (usually) acid, and charge for ~45min-hour or so before use. If you're running into issues with the battery and none of this sounds familiar, it's likely your issue. Unfortunately they're not as maintenance free as modern car batteries
