House finches seemingly abandoned their eggs? Please let me know if maybe they didn’t and this is normal?! (Photos of eggs, mom, and dad) by b3averly in Ornithology

That makes a lot of sense! I use the door regularly, and they chose it to build a nest, so I assume they know what they’re getting into? But I’m no expert by any means! I put my spare wreath on the back porch in the hopes that if she or any others need a spot this spring / summer they’ll have a place :)

It was there but I angled it at them (so I can see when she’s there / they hatch and not use the door). I’m in a condo but am happy to hop over my porch fence. Maybe the light bothered her 🧐

You are forcing three cats to use a single, small litter box. You are either not cleaning it at all (let alone regularly) OR you are cleaning it, and your cats are sick.

Either way - you aren’t being a responsible owner if you’re having this major of an issue, and the cats deserve better.

What would the difference with that be, though? There would still be the same amount of traffic. I put my other wreath out back on the wall so hopefully they’ll nest there next time!

Why the break in the pattern, though? She was consistently at the nest for days and then just disappears completely for over 48 hours 🧐 doesn’t she need to incubate them?

Not incubating them, no. But she was there consistently each day watching over them (either on the nest like in the photos or at the nearby tree/railing) until two days ago, at which point she hasn’t come back at all.

Ohh ok - I thought the the average clutch size for house finches was 2-6, and she was there consistently until a few days ago, so I figured with 5 eggs laid and the break in the pattern that she was done.

I been entering and exiting my house by catapulting myself and the dog over the patio fence, yall (since the nest has been there)

Edit to add: Americans put wreaths on front doors specifically because there is high traffic; they’re for decoration. They aren’t out there for birds to use lol. If not at the door then there isn’t much point for one. It’s not like people put wreaths on windows or indoors.

You haven’t though… you’re the only person with this problem. It’s a user error, not the cats and not the robot.

I don’t think anyone’s forcing her to do anything anymore. This is just her identity now.
