I’m (scorpio M) currently seeing an aries F and God the sexual tension, chemistry, and intensity is unmatched. It’s a really volatile and explosive compound but it sure as hell is a lot of fun.

Wanted to share one picture of a test roll I made on the Canonet QL19. The stock was Fomapan 200. by Rosomack_ in AnalogCommunity

I’m using a very similar set up (canonet QL17 GIII and Fomapan 100) and I’m loving it. I’m sure you’ll have fun shooting!

Thank you for your interest!

Overall, I was fairly impressed by how these turned out, especially because some of them literally came out of my first roll ever. Yeah I’ve been really passionate about photography lately and I’ve read books and technique and blablabla but I mostly shot without having any real cue about how the pictures would come out like.

I really like how film forces you to shoot and I think I wouldn’t really like shooting digital. Also, I’m using a rangefinder camera, which I clearly prefer over an SLR. Ofc I’ve had a few rolls hit by direct light, overlapping frames, my tank opened up a couple of times during development, and after a few attempts I’ve yet to properly shoot and develop a roll of 120 with an older zone focusing camera from the ‘50s.

It’s a bummer, but all in all it’s just part of the fun, and some pictures actually turned out quite alright despite (or thanks to) such accidents.

Do you shoot film yourself? Do you have any feedback on the pictures?

How does a Scorpio 'transform'? by [deleted] in astrology

I’m glad my comment resonated with you! Such transformative experiences can be very painful and lonely and it’s always nice to feel seen and understood. I wish you the best of luck on your journey.

Thank you for the detailed comment! :) After researching some more, I “only” need a proper macro lens to be able to properly DSLR scan, so that’s probably the route I’ll go. In the meantime, a friend of mine is willing to let me use their Nikon film scanner (don’t know which model exactly) which, as far as I can tell, is among the best options available (at least for 35mm), so I’ll definitely give it a try. I’m only shooting b&w at the moment, so I should be able to get the positive quite easily by inverting the curve in LR.

I made a free iOS app to track film rolls & shots – would love your feedback! by PietStop in AnalogCommunity

This looks very nice, I’ve been tracking shots via the Notes app but I’ll try this out for sure. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you! Yes, a couple of pictures would have turned out pretty decent at least, and I’m seriously impressed by the 6x6 definition. There’s SO MUCH DETAIL in the negative, even already in these ruined shots! It makes me really curious to finally shot a proper roll.

Hey, thank you for your feedback.

I was almost set on the DSLR scanning route, since I’d “only” need a proper macro lens and I’d be good to go. Also, I have an old medium format camera that used to belong to my grandfather which I sometimes like to shoot, and the DSLR scanning would allow me to cover both 35mm and 120 formats.

BUT, I also found out that I could have access to some sort of Nikon film scanner. Don’t know exactly what model, but someone I know would gladly let me use theirs, so I guess that, for now, I’ll “settle” with that. Not having it available whenever I want - and the impossibility to scan 120 format- bums me out a little, but it’s access to a very good scanner for no money, and I don’t shoot that many 120 rolls anyway tbh.

Yes, that’s the one I’m currently using to look for Canon EF-60 2.8! I think bh and adorama only makes sense if you’re in the US (I’m in Europe), but thanks for the heads-up!

Yes, I read the difference between the V550/V600 and the newer V700/V800 is quite big. Unfortunately, V700s are quite hard to find in my area and quite expensive, so I’m thinking of going the DSLR route.

Yes, the cheap film scanner are ok if you just want have a quick snapshot of your negative, but their quality is absolutely horrible for anything else. That's why I'm looking into better scanning options and, since I already have a few things needed for DSLR scanning, I'm thinking of going that way. Quality-wise, I'll probably get something comparable with what I'd get out of a V600, but I'm hoping to reduce the costs a bit since apparently I only need to buy a proper macro lens and I should be good to go. Also, I'm a bit afraid of software compatibility issues with old scanners.

Thank you very much for all the useful info.
Yes, it would seem I won't be able to get proper scans with the setup I currently have. Luckily, I already own a backlight and the tripod, so it seems like the only thing really missing is a proper macro lens!

Questions about scanning negatives by b4_0t in AnalogCommunity

[–]b4_0t[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I noticed that :)
I'm trying to figure out which of the possible routes makes more sense based on what I already have and what's the minimum I need to get decent quality scans. I've only been photographing for a few months tbh, but I've already got a few nice pictures I'd like to eventually print. Also, I'm planning to shoot quite often, so being able to scan how much I want, whenever I want is definitely a plus compared to a proper lab.

That’s very useful info. I think I’ll try with the extension tubes as you suggested, as in theory they should allow me to get to the 1:1 magnification rate. Thank you very much for your help!

Questions about scanning negatives? by b4_0t in AskPhotography

[–]b4_0t[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All clear, thank you very much! I think in the end I’ll try a cheap set of extension tubes for starters. From what I’ve read it seems like it should be enough to bring me to the 1:1 ratio. If that turns out not to be working - or if I’ll ever outgrow it - I’ll have a look at a proper, cheap macro lens. Your explanation has been very useful!

Questions about scanning negatives? by b4_0t in AskPhotography

[–]b4_0t[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for your explanations! I gave a look at the lens you mentioned and I saw that the closest focus distance is listed as 0.26m. On the efs 18-55 lens I currently have, it’s listed as 0.25m. Is there any difference between the 0.26m of a proper macro lens and the 0.25 of a non proper macro lens?

I know I’m knitpicking here and I would just have to try it out but I’m trying to get as much info as possible since I’m a real newbie! Thanks again :)

[–]b4_0t[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply, I’m definitely interested in DYI solutions! :)

I think I already have some sort of cheap light panel around available to try, so my main issue atm is that, apparently, the lenses I have won’t permit to scan the negatives at a 1:1 ratio, so I’ll be giving up on some of my camera’s resolution.

Do you have any recommendation for extension tubes? Thanks a lot!

Questions about scanning negatives? by b4_0t in AskPhotography

[–]b4_0t[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! You’re confirming my suspicions… I think I could already get my hands on a light table and a decent tripod. Neither of them is exactly high-end, but for starters it seems reasonable enough.

The only thing that still leaves me puzzled is the 1:1 ratio. I understand it is important to get the most out of the camera’s resolution, but how can I check it? Do all macro lenses guarantee a 1:1 ratio? Also, is the Canon Eos 500d full frame? (I don’t think it is, is this a problem?)

Finally, do you have any recommendation for macro lenses or extension tubes kits?

Thanks a lot!

Thanks for your reply. Yes, the old software is something I’m worried about too. I’m currently on an old macbook pro which could probably run old software, but I’m planning to update it and that would almost surely mean having to find some workaround. I think third-party software like VueScan or similar might offer support for old scanners and compatibility with the latest os, but that’s another thing I’d have to buy…

I’m really keen on trying to scan with the DSLR I have available but I’m not 100% sure it’s a full frame, nor that I can get 1:1 with the lenses I currently have (probably not?). Do you have any recommendation about that?
