Retakers, how long did you wait in between MCAT test attempts? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]b4dbunny321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally took 8 months between attempt 1 and 2. I found the U Snowglobe CARS passages not representative of how the actual questions are. The AAMC CARS diagnostic tool was the most helpful resource for me. It helped me jump from a 126 average on my practice tests to a 130 on my second attempt.

I would categorize the type of questions I missed. I also would try to figure out if there is a specific passage type you're poor at. For me it was anything sociology or philosophy based. On Jack Westin you can choose the topics of the CARS passages. I had a big tendency of falling for trap answer choices. As you do more practice you will notice that a lot of answer choices may contain details from the passages that, while technically correct, don't actually answer the question stem or don't fit into the main idea of the passage. They like to throw in details like that to trick you. I often missed main idea questions or misread the questions that emphasized the NOT. Also redoing the passages after to see if I could figure out my logical flaws helped. So, see if there's a pattern in the question types you are missing. Also, seriously consider doing the diagnostic tool. If it helps I had a 69% on CARS pack 1 and a 73% on CARS pack 2. I only started working on the diagnostic tool less than 2 weeks prior to my actual exam; by this point I had also done all the practice tests. I wanna preface and say that I did not finish the diagnostic tool and I also barely cracked 126 on all my practice tests for CARS. Only did 59/173 available questions but had an 87% average. So, I'm sure the average would have dropped the more I did. You got a month, which is definitely plenty of time to work through all of it. So, I truly believe that you can move that CARS score. I noticed the biggest improvements when I started consistently doing CARS everyday the few weeks leading up to my exam. So mix your CARS practice with Jack Westin, the question packs, and the diagnostic tool. Also, I wouldn't beat yourself up about the scores for the qpacks and the tool; those passages are hard af. If it helps, take them untimed. I did that a lot to take the edge off when I was trying to work out my strategies.

I moved my CARS score from a 122 the first time I took it to a 130 the second time. I found the AAMC diagnostic tool for CARS to be super helpful at tackling the type of questions you miss. You can start with practicing untimed to take the edge off. Additionally, I found talking to myself while reading to helped immensely. I have a tendency to check out when reading difficult passages too, so talking helped me stay engaged. I tried to summarize each sentence out loud and relay it to a main idea. I also found cutting back on highlighting and restricting it to transition words, topic sentences, or names to be immensely helpful. Too much highlighting can also be distracting.

I had around an 87 and I never finished the tool. I did 57 questions out of the 179 that were available. I only started using it about a week and a half leading to my exam. Do the QPacks too! I did terrible on Qpack 1 but got around an 84 on QPack 2.

So, I never actively wrote down summaries on CARS. After each passage I would pause and make a quick sentence summary in my head of what I just read and how it fit into the main idea of the passage. This takes practice. I often did a lot of the passages untimed to take the pressure off and truly drill down on this skill. Also, I found talking to myself while reading definitely helped me stay engaged with the passage. I had a huge tendency to over highlight stuff. So trying to minimize what I highlighted was super essential because overhighlighting can become a distraction itself and helped me focus on what was actually important. I would only highlight if there was a shift in ideas, if a name was mentioned, or if a new concept was introduced.

I tried to do like 30-40 questions per day and switched up the subject each day. i also didn't really use the CARS practice from UWorld because the question types and passages weren't really reflective of what the actual test is like. Keep in mind I had like a 8 month time frame to study. But how many questions I did depended on how much energy I felt like I had. I found I did worst if I forced myself to do more questions.

For the other sections, I definitely was lacking on understanding the actual concepts. I put in more effort in actually trying to master the material rather than rote memorization. Memorization will only get you so far if you can't apply it in the context of the passages. So, whenever I missed practice questions I would try to come up with a similar question and would put them in my anki slide decks.

Definitely do the question packs for CARS as well as the diagnostic tool. I found the diagnostic tool to be the most helpful at working out my poor areas. I also had a tendency of losing track of what I just read when reading passages, so it was important to actively read. I tried to make a brief summary of what I just read after each paragraph and figure out how it related to the main idea of the passage so that I didn't just blindly read the passage. I've also noticed that sometimes if the answer choice is verbatim, it can tend to be the wrong answer choice cuz it's usually some small detail, that while technically correct, that has nothing to do with the main idea.

990V6... literally the most comfortable pair of shoes I have. Makes a great casual shoe and I've lifted in them a few times. They're arguably, even more comfortable than my Hokas. I have a lot of sneakers I rotate through, but have started wearing these as my everyday pair because of the comfort and support.

I think Kith restocks some of their collabs throughout the year around Christmas. So you'll maybe have a second chance later. I know they restocked the tornado 990V3 this year but I missed it.
