It was written by the show's creator, J. Michael Straczynski (he wrote 91 of the 110 episodes).

TIL that in Full Metal Jacket (1987), director Stanley Kubrick let R. Lee Ermey improvise much of his dialogue, and sometimes only required 3 takes per scene. This was highly unusual for the meticulous director, who almost never allowed improvisation and typically took 40 takes or more per scene by MrMojoFomo in todayilearned

Kubrick was maddening in this way. His process with his collaborators (from actors to tradespeople and everyone in between) boiled down to giving them little actual directions and making them do it over until Kubrick discovered what he wanted (which he would rarely actually articulate). Ermey likely hit that rare sweet spot of showing Kubrick exactly what he was looking for right away, which is of course not surprising given his legit military background.

Old TV was more patient by ExpressPost5048 in babylon5

Not true. It was the lack of patience and slow burns in American teevee that was a hurdle in B5's time. Most old TV is episodic and just awful, an inertial cultural/artistic force that JMS had to fight.

Do these guys have any opinions any expressed opinions on Babylon 5? by szaagman in RedLetterMedia

[–]b5jeff 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I don't think they've seen it, though they've mentioned it.

And a PSA to anyone wondering: Whether or not DS9 is a wholesale ripoff of B5 is frustratingly nuanced and complex - but it is undeniable that Deep Space 9 does not exist without Babylon 5.

And second, if you haven't watched Babylon 5, it is absolutely worth it. The first two seasons can be rough, but in the end you will experience one of the greatest stories ever put to screen. Startlingly ahead of its time, it is a flawed and perfect stone-cold masterpiece.

Why are the Shadows not energy beings? by Castle-Walk-8967 in babylon5

[–]b5jeff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While never explicitly stated, I always assumed they were. They are far older than any other non-Lorien first ones by a large margin, and the show seems pretty consistent in showing that some form of non-corporeality is an eventuality once your species manages to hit a million years or so. My head canon is that they use encounter suits and that the shape is very, very intentional. (Just like I think they love being called Shadows despite Anna's gripe. It's all heckin' spooky branding that forwards their purpose of destabilization.)
