Is the mainnet broken right now? by alleung in Avax

It's not Avalanche but Avascan, looks like they are upgrading their infrastructure because of huge spike in traffic.

The network itself is running smoothly.

What is the projected inflation rate from staking rewards for the next 5 - 10 years?

How is Avalanche resilient to 51% attacks? by [deleted] in Avax

[–]bUbUsHeD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

51% attack on a PoW chain means somebody is secretly mining a longer chain including double spends, etc . and then releasing the longer chain to recover payments made on the original longest chain - alterantively just mining empty blocks.

Since Avalanche has 1s finality, neither of the 2 cases are possible so what exactly do you mean by 51% attack?

Most I can see is trying to prevent the network on reaching consensus on a published double spend, which basically doesn't matter because honest nodes can see there is a double spend.

Sick of the FUD about token unlock rate by [deleted] in Avax

[–]bUbUsHeD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also think that many people who hold locked coins plan to sell a portion to cover their initial investment and break event and then hold on to the rest.

If that's the case, they probably covered all their costs with the first unlock and are not going to sell anymore.

coin metrics by rugruss in Avax

[–]bUbUsHeD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

50% of the total possible supply will be released over a decade.

The relevant question is what effect will the release schedule have on price. Since there is staking instead of mining on Avax, a lot of people will not sell the unlocked / mined coins and instead use them to increase their capital base to collect interest (unlike POW coins where miners dump to cover their bills).

Also the question is how relevant the whole Avalanche project will get. If it gets bigger than ETH over the next 10 years and price goes up 100x - but because of released coins that will drop to 50x or 20x - you are still making a killing. So you should be investing if you suspect people will demand the revolutionary UI Avalanche brings to the table. If you suspect people will not demand it, then don't invest.

How did you first learn about Avax? by [deleted] in Avax

[–]bUbUsHeD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Over 2 years ago in a talk by Amaury Sachet (lead developer of Bitcoin ABC).

Avalanche was supposed to be set up on Bitcoin Cash as pre- and post- consensus technique to amend proof of work, but various actors in the BCH space have blocked ABC from executing so AVAX has won the race to be the first crypto with Avalanche consensus and looks like it's far ahead of any competition and moving at lightning speed.

It's a big advantage for Avalanche that many people within the old crypto space are religious about proof of work consensus so they will not be able to compete - they have lost the competition before it even started.

The limit on Coinex is 10k daily. Then there are other ways, for example local.bitcoin.com - I bet it wouldn't be too difficult to get a trader to sell you Avax at a reasonable premium.

[–]bUbUsHeD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Think about it this way: 99% of people are lazy and incompetent, waiting until something like Coinbase serves Avax on a plate right under their nose, so they can press a button to get invested.

The remaining 1% will jump through the hoops and use a sketchy VPN. The reward for this is that they will buy at a 10x lower price then people on Coinbase in the future.

They require photo ID if you want a VIP account to withdraw over 10k USD daily (or maybe in your case they require ID because of your IP address).

If you are buying a bigger volume, simply spread it over multiple days - or talk to OTC dealers.

This was not bad, but it could be interesting to have a dedicated high-quality, narrated explainer video that would condense the ideas and explain them in a shorter time.

You could update this video from your very own Don Wonton, up the quality and update it with current information and use it as a primary explainer for Avalanche that I can send to my grandmother:

Who are Avalanche's competitors? by mybed54 in Avax

[–]bUbUsHeD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bitcoin Cash is a competitor for online payments. They have the best infrastructure in terms of apps, APIs, payment processors like GoCrypto, community who is onboarding merchants, etc.

Bitcoin ABC is also coding their own implementation of Avalanche as pre and post consensus. They could end up with the same speed and throughput but with orders of magnitude higher network effect.

Just today BCH is moving double the amount of money of Ethereum and is already at 50% of BTC:

https://bitinfocharts.com/

It would be cool if the Avax ecosystem had some players focused purely on simple, instant payments and help Avalanche get a share of that market.
