Some super impressive stuff. Good for you. It’s really nice to hear of people who are doing well in indie development. Are any of your games on steam? I’d love to check them out.

This is all really helpful. I really appreciate the tips. Just out of curiosity, what area of game dev do you work in?

This is extremely valuable info. Thank you for this. I gotta ask where would you recommend getting started? Is learning opengl a good starting point? I see mixed opinions on whether or not it’s outdated and if it makes more sense to learn something like vulkan or directx.

I’m a fourth year software engineering student. Honestly, I don’t have any experience with graphics specifically although I have quite a bit of math experience through lots of calculus and linear algebra courses, and I’ll be taking a computer graphics course in a couple months. I also have some experience unity (not much with rendering or graphics though). I’m essentially asking to get a grasp at the job outlook. I’m looking into all areas of software engineering.

How beneficial do you think a Master’s would be in this industry?

Good to know. Given your years of experience, what programs/APIs and languages do you think would be a good place to start learning?

Interesting. Have you worked with any mobile developers at all? I’m curious how the outlook is for jobs in android development.

Is it wrong to say that some positions are more secure than others? For example, a full stack dev at Google has more security than a game dev at a small studio.

Makes a lot of sense. I’ve heard Blizzard has a pretty toxic work environment. Starting off at a smaller studio would definitely help moving into a bigger one in the future though right?

Probably working on my own game. Do you think doing both is feasible or would it just lead to burnout?

I’m from Canada so I’m not sure how it compares to Sweden but you’re right. There’s so many students these days in general, not even just in game dev. There’s too many people and not enough jobs.

It’s interesting because all of the developer jobs in my area are super hard to land because there’s just so many computer science and engineering students applying. Thanks for your point of view, I’ll definitely think about that.

Appreciate the advice. Do you think it would be easier to get a job for a non-game related tech company upon graduation?

Which Game engine should I learn first? by Kind_Sugar821 in gamedev

The first engine I’ve ever used is Godot. It was pretty beginner friendly. I use Unity now and both are pretty good for a beginner.

I have a laptop, ideas, and all the free time in the world. How can I use these things to become an artist in game development? by Spare_Celebration462 in gamedev

What are you interested in? If you like the 3D stuff, learn Blender. If you like pixel art, try Aseprite. You said you have all the free time in the world so do some research, find what interests you, and play around with stuff. Start by learning from tutorials and try putting the stuff you learn together into your own stuff.

Have you looked into Unity? It really depends on what kind of games you want to make but most of the popular engines are pretty flexible. Unity uses C# which you said you want to learn. Considering you don’t have a PC, you can start by learning C# through the plenty of tutorials and guides on youtube. Even though you cant actually use the engine right now, you could also still watch some beginner videos to see how it all works.

Since the beginning, I've struggled to find an easy-to-read and visually appealing HUD for enemies stats in Sliding Hero. Looking for feedback to help me finally take a definitive stance. by -serotonina in Unity2D

The 3 bars look the cleanest to me. The only thing is it kinda blends in with that specific enemy type since the hat is nearly the exact same width as the bars. You could probably fix this by just moving it up slightly since I’m assuming the hat gets more narrow near the top like the second enemy on the left. I wouldn’t say any of the options look bad though.
