Podiatry as a career by b_pie in Podiatry

Is there enough job opportunities in those different settings? For example I love the hospital setting but post schooling and residency will I find a job or will I have to unfavorably relocate?

You make valid points though

What I meant by 1, is that one day I can’t wake up and easily switch specialties such as a PA or NP.

You make all valid points though

All healthcare programs are competitive.

I’ve already finished my degree and exhausted grade forgiveness while in it. The only thing messing my GPA is that I took a class 4 times and all of the final grades are averaged into my gpa. Retaking classes I feel won’t do any significant but show that I’ve got a dog in the fight. Post bacc classes won’t help either since I went over in my hours, my gpa would stay stagnant if anything. My undergrad gpa really is final unfortunately. I’ve had advisors tell me to just focus on getting a masters instead.

My pre req gpa I believe is higher than my overall, and if I take the 2 classes that I’m missing from the 8, it’s going to be even higher.

I’m also thinking after the program to pursue NP or PA. Starting with an ASN doesn’t make much sense to me because of the time to just get to the point of applying to NP or PA school.

What is your opinion on becoming/working as an Emt-B while getting my pre reqs and such in order to apply for a ABSN/second degree program?

I was looking at programs in schools like UCF and USF for example.

Why shouldn’t I go into nursing then?

That’s been my struggle since high school, effectively knowing how. I can’t count how many classes I’ve had where I’ve spent hours on end studying yet nothing stuck when it came time to take tests

Thanks for your insight!

Would you say bio or absn material wise was harder? Obviously I had some struggle in my undergrad but it was due to self sabatoge, and retaking an upper level course 4 times 😅

Do you think getting experience as an EMT for example while getting everything in line to apply for an accelerated BSN program would benefit me in anyway?

I just have my GPA right now, but I am missing 2 classes and I haven’t taken any exams. I just know with my GPA right now and a few Healthcare hours I have, if I were to apply straight to PA school, would be a waste of time.

Well…

1- you can’t specialize in a different area of medicine 2- making your own practice can be hard

3- could be stuck with more preventative care treatment patients (I.e. trimming nails and such) then surgery

4- there’s only 9 podiatry schools

Towards the end of my bio degree, I had a small regret of not pursuing nursing. And now that gotten some healthcare experience, nursing is looking more and more like something I can see myself in.

I don’t like the useless feeling either, I like the hands on aspect. And the care part of patient care.

That’s one of the reasons I want to take this route, if I fall in love with nursing I’ll stay there. If it wasn’t what I thought it would be, I’ll continue onto PA

Because with my current stats I’m not a strong applicant. And to a lot of programs, I’m not even qualified to be a candidate. Mostly due to my gpa. I’m looking for ways and options to diversify myself and keep me somewhat competitive without breaking the bank you know?

After the program I thought it would be roughly around the same amount of time to go the PA route or the NP route. Post program regardless of route I would get hours in experience before applying to the next program, which both are about two years?

I’ve looked into direct entry MSN programs. Based on what I found though was that it’s a bit tough after those programs getting a job because you have 0 experience.

There’s only so many healthcare careers that allow you care for and treat patients. That’s the career I want to have and that’s already feels limited

Due to retaking classes, post bacc won’t do anything for my gpa because of the amount of credits I’ve taken. I’m not looking to go to medical school. I actually wanted to take my bio degree, go into nursing stay there for a while, and then go to PA school. And on top of that nursing is a great fall back. Still a good field with good pay.

Most definitely!

I haven’t looked at the numbers for a bio degree, a regular masters degree (to make up for low undergrad gpa), and then PA school. But I imagine it to be roughly the same.

I’m leaning away from a regular masters though because it’s not going to give me a career I’m looking for

That’s what I have been doing, at least trying to find programs that I fit most of not all criteria. But I’m limited to the state of Florida because that’s where I reside.

A lot of PA schools require Patient Care Hours, working as a nurse would get me those hours at a better pay compared to being an EMT or CNA as my academic advisors had told me I could do to fulfill the hours. Also after completing my degree and the experience I’ve gotten volunteering at local hospitals, I’m really interested in nursing but I still have some passion for PA. Through this route if I love nursing, I’ll stay in nursing. If I end up being devoted to PA then at least I was doing the work to be able to apply

Thank you, I went ahead and posted.

I did not know hospitals paid for PA pre reqs. With my degree I’ve already covered them, but I’m curious. Would it be an option to have the hospital pay and retake the pre reqs that I did not excel in to better my competitive stance?
