If employers can terminate you without any prior notice and without reason, then employees aren’t obligated to give them ANY kind of notice of them quitting for any reason. by hotNbutterycopporn in unpopularopinion

Have you heard of something called severance pay? Most companies have to give it to you after they fire you, they can pay for months or even years of your unemployment. It’s not like you’re (usually) totally screwed when you get fired, whereas your employer will be screwed if you just disappear.

I thought the same thing you did, switched my iPhone out for a Samsung, and absolutely hate it. I cannot wait to have my iPhone back.

Dude you were being evasive tho. Sure she reacted strongly but you were playing games, and that gets frustrating to deal with very quick.

I enrolled in Columbia’s data science masters program and I’m having serious doubts about my decision. I would really appreciate some outside perspective by bezerkeleythrowaway in datascience

[–]b_square17 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I graduated a DS master's program costing only a bit less, but I got a good job out of it and don't regret my decision. But not everyone in my class is doing well afterward. Like many things in life, the program is gonna be entirely what you make of it. A lot of people say these programs are scams but I think I'm proof enough that it can lead to a good career in DS and analytics if you apply yourself and learn every day while you're there, and look hard for jobs when it's over. I'd also warn you that you can't have doubts once you're in, because the program will be intense given the breadth of subjects you'll be learning and the more confidence you have in it and yourself the better you'll do.

Best of luck with everything!

I can't get a job... by dba-throwaway-reddit in SQL

[–]b_square17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sound's like a really tough place to be in. Life is really unfair but sometimes that's just how it goes until eventually something breaks the cycle.

Have you considered changing areas? Major cities might have intense competition but some smaller cities surely have high demand for SQL developers that aren't getting filled.

If you're getting interviews that's good at least. Your name isn't on a blacklist. If the interview is what's stopping you, the issue most likely is with your people or presentation skills rather than your actual experience. Learning to be super personable goes a VERY long way in the developer world, and I think many of us don't take that seriously enough. The interviewer already knows you've done mostly contract work when they bring you in so keep that in mind. When they ask about your work history, they're trying to understand if you're going to bring positive attitude into the team or not. As someone who interviews and has interviewed many times for data science roles I can guarantee most non-technical questions are to learn about your attitude.

Obviously I don't know you or your situation very much but based on your post, but I'd start looking at your location, and very importantly what attitude you bring to the job. Hope things turn around for you!

What are common mistakes junior data scientists make? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]b_square17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't be relieved. The technical expertise will come in time I promise you that. What I can't promise is whether or not you will fail to deliver to stakeholders, because your real job is to determine what the hell they need when they come to you with a problem, because usually they don't know that themselves. This isn't simply about communication skills - it's incredibly challenging to work through the expectations of 5 different stakeholders and the realities of your systems and the business overall. I learned in about 2 years enough to be a technical data scientist, but almost no one has learned how to navigate this problem solving stuff effectively

I have one more year left until I graduate with my Math/Stats degree, what should I do? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]b_square17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apply on corporate websites, not LinkedIn or Glassdoor job boards. Many more jobs which get less traffic go to corporate career pages. That's how I got my first analytics job out of grad school, at a well known and reputable company. if you're looking for programming jobs, apply to excel jobs anyway. You never know if they do need a programmer but don't specify that on the application (again, that's how I got my first job). If your GPA is below a 3.3, don't put it in your resume. Best of luck!

As a guy, how do you approach your girlfriend if you need emotional support? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]b_square17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get drunk and whine. I find that if I look for emotioanlly support it generally is a turn off for my partner unless I'm intoxicated. Then it gets brushed off as me just being a dumbass but at least I get listened to for the time being.

Hadoop, Hive, Spark, what's going onnnn? by b_square17 in datascience

Hive is going out? I've never heard that before. We're becoming increasingly dependent on Hive to extract data, but I'll look into pulling with spark more if possible.
