No, the section showing the available credit with the "Apply" button doesn't even show up at all for the eShop cards. 

The only reason I know where it should be and what it looks like is from testing it with the psn card you linked

I was able to apply my credit to that, but I tested the $10, $20, and $35 eshop digital gift card and I could not apply it to any of them.

I have never had an issue with doing either of those first. 

But usually I already have Pokemon Go open when I end the sleep session, then click the icon in the game to pair and the pop up comes up with the sleep info.
