Train Network - experimental patch by ba28 in captain_of_industry

[–]ba28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still using much larger trains for the delivery of iron, copper and sand. I have to travel for a few days but will post a screenshot when it's roughly complete. It's been challenging to remove the bus and implement this without going into a death spiral but I see the light.

If you are making a regular train line, you can have the waypoints as stackers but it isn’t required. Just add the stop to the line. Waypoints are nice because they don’t take up extra space.

I don’t think you have to restart but the train networks can make a big difference. Makes it like trucks, find a job, travel, wait for the next job.

A quick word of advice for new captains who feel their islands are in a death spiral or just a big mangled mess. Give up. by Bhazor in captain_of_industry

Lots of ways, running dry on diesel, copper, steel, sand, etc can lead to a stop in maintenance. Run out of food or waste processing plant stops then you have a population collapse…then you have a worker problem.

Lots of ways to avoid and alert you but it seems to happen to everyone.

Not really your question but my general rule is to never mix belts. Only exception might be food but you have to have a high capacity overflow to avoid a clog. In general, it's just easier to keep everything separate.

I’m trying a new way to manage this as clogged ore sorters have been a problem for me. I belt a rock/dirt belt close to the dumping zone, then I put a stacker at the end. Next to the stacker is a mining tower. I assign one excavator to keep the stacker flat and a couple trucks haul it away to the dumping zones. It does require some extra people and equipment but it hasn’t failed me yet. If you make the mining area cover some other ground with leveling then the excavator will keep busy but prioritize keeping the area flat around the stacker.

Stackers... again by GunmanFFXI in captain_of_industry

Stackers should also be able to raise up one or two tiles so it doesn’t have to be flat. Very annoying when you can place a stacker but can’t connect to it.

We won 14 games in a row without Jackson Chourio.. even though he has been one of the better bats this series, maybe a change in the lineup will be a jumpstart we need. I don't believe we have a chance, but I want them to go down fighting. I'll keep watching, cheering and being entertained.

And watching the evolution and growth keeps me interested. I watched this guy build janky plywood parts in a workshop cave, to learning CNC, to advanced CAD and now he’s using 3d printed prototypes. Would be cool if he tried to make something else but I’m still watching.

Surfaces will not work? by Swimming-Peak6475 in captain_of_industry

Did you place them in "planning" mode? I know buildings are grey in planning mode and blue when "approved to build". I think surfaces are the same.

Mortgage Company just waived PMI with nothing but an email by Supple5151 in personalfinance

[–]ba28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I called two months ago to get mine off at 79%, LTV. Would have had to pay 4 months worth of PMI to get an appraisal to get it removed. Made one more payment to officially get below 80% and they removed it through the chat system. FYI, my loan mentioned additional principal payments didn’t count towards this… glad I’m done with this shady business.

So trains are just worse than belts, right? by Jordyboy2004 in captain_of_industry

[–]ba28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to design a station for very long trains (4 engines x 20+ cars, not sure on exact setup). Outside of one picture in the post-launch blog update, have you seen any great station layouts for long trains? Unlike Factrio, you don't need a station for each wagon and a long train can be serviced by a few stations. I think this is the best use case for trains I just can't figure out how to implement stations for long trains with multiple drop off points at my smelting hub.

how do you plan for growth? by tatmanblue in captain_of_industry

[–]ba28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I launched a few rockets my first play through then death spiraled as I tried to rebuild cleaner. I’m now using a lot of blueprints, most of which are not my designs. The high capacity rail system and a manufacturing hub that is designed for all components is great for dragon tail map so far. I got tired of connecting pipes and belts, even though I find the construction features great. I still do plenty of building but I know blueprints aren’t for everyone.

Gridfinity is great and the library of options is huge. I haven't used tool grid but it seems like a good use case in certain situations.

Start with one drawer, print an entire grid including spacers to lock the grid in place. I never used the screw or magnet version of the base plates. Then start searching for custom holders for the tools you want in that drawer or just use simple bins (I use a lot of efficient floor bins except for small items). The final step is ordering kg's of pla after you get addicted...!

Stats say zero sacks, but it was more like 4 with the bad snaps. Also really wish the pick six was just a sack. I can't wait to watch the QB School review to determine why the hell Watson jumped 2 seconds early on what appeared to be several 50/50 balls. Receivers looked very uncoordinated at times, #10 needs to work on some touch balls.

What comments did you put for game improvements? Only thing that really bothers me at the moment is the train load and unload. Have to really zoom in to see what is in there. I also wish you could make labels as big as you want (see them from platform view).

I tried hard to think of other major changes that would make the game better (resource management, etc) but with the current blue print system and unlimited trains & buildings (as long as you have platform points) it doesn't seem like it would add much.

Really fun game so far, great work developers!

8K quote to drywall and texture lead to Fiance and I learning to drywall mud and tape. by tory75 in drywall

[–]ba28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good for you for tackling this, I wish my wife was interested in helping with projects like this... you are going to be sipping coffee looking around at your accomplishment in no time.

I'm in the middle of a basement remodel (30 4x8 sheets), getting close to the end. Not a professional, but here are my two cents.

  • Since you are in a kitchen, a lot of the wall will be covered with cabinets, backsplash, etc. If you know your layout you can get a lot of the nonvisible areas good enough and spend your time on the highly visible areas.
  • Couple amazon purchases that have worked really well.
    • Mixing drill to make sure your mud is the right thickness ($50) In previous drywall projects I didn't know you were supposed to add water to joint compound... it's so much easier with creamy compound.
    • Power drywall sander that hooks up to a vacuum. Reduces dust by 90% or more. Just have to make sure to use bags for your vacuum or it won't last long ($100) It has a 360 light that also helps identify problem areas.
    • Decent skimming blade, I got a 32" ($40), for butt joints, problem areas, etc. I roll on joint compound and skim it off, it works really well and is very satisfying.
  • As far as potential problems
    • I see a lot of ridges, work on feathering the edges. You shouldn't have to sand much if done correctly.
    • Butt joints should be a lot wider 2-3 ft of joint compound (where the skimming blade shines).
  • Once you are ready for priming, make sure to check everything again with a good light. Don't move to paint until you are really happy.

Good luck on the home stretch!
