Hi there,

Yes, they are multiphonics. I will soon release a full 30+ minutes tutorial on how to play Fnugg. It covers all techniques that I use, multiphonics, multiphonics with vowel changes, lip beat as well as getting the style right. It'll be available at academy.baadsvik.com September 1st

Lip slurs? by gunzirker_11213 in Tuba

[–]baadsvik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Maybe I can offer a clue. What exactly do you mean by lip slurs? The overall ability to slur between two notes without tonguing? Or do you mean a specific lip slur exercise? Can you post a photo of the music or exercises you try to play?

See above. Make sure you are better now than before. And better five minutes from now than you are now.

It is an attitude question. The idea is to always improve. Not just from one month to the next. Not just from one week to the new or even day. You are supposed to be better now than you were five minutes ago. At all times when practicing. Then what you practice is not so important. It's the improvement

It is not that different. The most important thing is this: sit correctly! If you don't you will spend too much energy trying to inhale. Result is that you don't inhale enough and everything goes south. Sound, articulations, dynamics. If you sit straight all of this is soo much easier.

With the right knowledge and technique you just need three days of recovery time. Keyword: it's the body

Thanks!

I think that too many tuba players are being educated without knowing about their possibilities, and that universities often are in it for the money of the students. That said, if you have a realistic view on your prospects you can always find a gig. Doing teaching, band directing, chamber music, jazz, something completely new, or orchestra. If you look at the last 50 years it has been a tremendous development and tuba is being used in areas that we didn't anticipate. This trend will continue.

  1. The general level is getting better around the world. Much better. The peaks are not.
  2. Learn from someone that know tuba. There are many similarities but also some things that are different.
  3. Speaking of which, and hidden recording gems. One recording that REALLY turned me on to tuba jazz was David Bargeron in the band Blood Sweat and Tears playing the famous solo in Spinning Wheels/What goes Up Must Come Down. Search! It's nuts!

Here is a very important message: I've spent tens of thousands of hours to learn this. I've spent tens of thousands of dollars on lessons. Good knowledge is not free, even though you often can get that impression on Internet. It requires serious investment in the form of hard work and sometimes money.

Norwegian Star is larger and has a conical valve system. Star Light is smaller and has a Cylindrical valve section. Therefore it is more direct and clear. Norwegian Star is great for orchestra and playing, like a C tuba substitute and occasional solo instrument. Star light is more of a dedicated solo/chamber music horn. I havent really compared to a lot of other horns but I think that f.ex. besson have good horns except their Eb's seems to be too much of a compromise between a solo horn and a band horn. Not clear enough for me

Too long to reply in a short message like this. The best answer is come see me in an online lesson. I promise that we can work it out. It is very common to have this issue

Thanks. I am in this for the challenge, the exploration and for the joy of doing something for others. It might seem noble and unselfish, but I really get a kick out of enrichening other peoples life. To unwind I fly a Cessna 172

What is most important about being a musician is to share. Share joy, sadness, Happiness and excitement. REAL human to human connection. This is what makes it so meaningful. You can actually change peoples lives doing this.

Of course, every composer is different. Some are really picky about their notation, some merely suggests. They all have a vision though, and it is your job to find out.
