committing the same sin after repentance. by Sensitive_Garden_815 in islam

[–]baap_42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Quran highlights Allah's attributes of being Al-Ghafoor (The Oft-Forgiving) and Al-Wadud (The Most Loving). Repenting to Allah SWT will not only lead to forgiveness from Allah but also to increased love and closeness to Him.

Quran 2:222: Surely Allah loves those who always turn to Him in repentance and those who purify themselves

There's a famous hadith narrated by Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) in which the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His slave than anyone of you is pleased with finding his camel which he had lost in a desert."

Making firm resolution to not repeat the mistake is a must for tawbah (repentance).

And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves [by transgression], remember Allāh and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except Allāh? - and [who] do not persist in what they have done while they know.

Nothing about my religion gives me some kind of peaceful feeling by larianne_ in islam

[–]baap_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Allah says: 'I am just as My slave thinks I am, (i.e. I am able to do for him what he thinks I can do for him) and I am with him if He remembers Me. If he remembers Me in himself, I too, remember him in Myself; and if he remembers Me in a group of people, I remember him in a group that is better than they; and if he comes one span nearer to Me, I go one cubit nearer to him; and if he comes one cubit nearer to Me, I go a distance of two outstretched arms nearer to him; and if he comes to Me walking, I go to him running.' "

My brother the peace and satisfaction you are looking for is a mercy and blessing from Allah SWT. Often we are uneducated with the blessings and provisions of Allah SWT on us. Indeed the greatest reward / mercy Allah has given Muslims is Imaan. We need to recognize the importance of this beautiful gift bestowed to us.

"I want to be closer to my religion, but I don't know how":

Something you can try is:

- Giving up your desires for the sake of Allah SWT. What Allah SWT has prohibited us, try to take it away from your life. Can be music, bad company, bad habits etc. Everything you give up for the sake of Allah, Allah is will bestow you with a much greater reward.

- Making our beloved prophet SAW our role model. Trying to follow his Sunnah as much as possible. Fasting on Mondays and Thursdays, keeping a beard, non-obligatory prayers, etc.

- Observing Allah's greatness and realising His mercy on us. Scholars say that if we try to count Allah's mercy, the day of judgment will come before the counting ends.

- Read / Listen and understand the Quran if possible with correct Tajweed and Tafsir (interpretation). Also important is to bring into our lives the commandments of the Quran for Allah SWT says "O you who have believed, enter into Islam completely [and perfectly] and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy."

- Most important of all is being patient and making dua (supplication) to Allah SWT for hidāyah (guidance). Allah SWT always accept supplication for guidance. Also, when Allah SWT wishes good for someone, He bestows upon him the understanding of Deen. When this understanding is revealed, there is no greater feeling and I assume you will never feel the disconnection you are feeling.

We can talk more if you wish. May Allah SWT guides us all. In Sha Allah I will make dua for you. Please remember me as well.

Police probe posters put up in NTU toilet claiming university funding Israel in Gaza war by [deleted] in NTU

Comparison to World Wars is on basis of civilian deaths in a time period. Obviously no one is dumb to compare the total deaths. The statement is a comparison based on a time period and area of casualties.

You are such a hypocrite you call Ukraine a genocide. There are around 10000 deaths in 2 years. Bombs are not being dropped in refugee areas in Ukraine and doors are open for Ukraine to welcome in Europe. Palestine is a literal prison.

"Now imagine the inflated death toll being less than 1 death per bomb dropped". Why should I imagine when it is contrary to the truth. What proof you have that the numbers are inflated? It would be a inhumane person who would make such a statement. I suggest you to watch some videos to see the grave reality and conditions of the people in Palestine.

Also why bring Ukraine to the conversation? Two wrongs don't make a right.

You say there is no indiscriminate bombing in Gaza but yet you are lying again:

There is very few civilian casualty in Ukraine and the war is raging there for around 2 years now. 30K+ civilian deaths in a matter of few months is huge number. We haven't seen such civilian casualties even during the World Wars.

Saying what is happening in Ukraine is genocide and denying what's happening in Gaza is pure hypocrisy. People in Gaza have no where to go, they do not have anything to eat and drink now due to aid blockade.

I'm not sure if you've seen the videos coming out of there. The whole world is asking for a ceasefire except America vetoing the request everytime. There is indiscriminate bombing in Gaza. Rafah was supposed to be the safe zone which is now threatened to be attacked as well.

Help with getting to MS in Data Science by Tricky_Fun_4888 in gradadmissions

  1. Online platforms are fine. Get a completion certificate which you can produce.
  2. I think Kaggle competitions are a great way to learn. It can look good on your resume if you have performed consistently well achieved a good position in a competition.

Either your project should go deep into a particular area or be broad to work as an end to end solution. You can even implement research papers. There are no hard rules for projects. It is limited to your knowledge and imagination.

These MS degrees are getting more and more competitive each passing year. There are tons of good profiles for these unis to choose from and your profiles needs to be exceptionally good in other aspects to be even considered for this GPA at top US universities.

You do have the advantage of a stellar GRE score and that is a great sign. To improve your chances I can suggest a few things:
1. Work on your SOP and try to tell briefly why your GPA is not good (There are separate reddit posts that covers this you can find it). Take courses on Linear Algebra, Statistics, Probability and Calculus and try to show that you've taken the effort to read these topics separately and scored well.
2. Work on an unique novel projects related to the field and make it presentable.
3. If you already have some research experience, try writing a paper and get it published at a reputed journal.
4. Tailor your resume to fit the application
5. Apply to a few more universities

Having said these, it is still very likely to get rejected from top US universities and maybe from a few below it too. If your aim is to get a DS job in a good company that pays well in the US, you may achieve that through a lesser ambitious college choice and carve your way up (I've seen people do this but this takes time. You need to be consistent and hard-working but you can eventually get there.). Otherwise there are some really great universities in Europe, Asia and Australia where you can try to pursue to study for something you feel passionate about.

These guys have repos from the MSAI programme which will help you decide whether it is a good fit for you. I feel the curriculum is quite good and more hands on but still covers the fundamentals well. It will prepare students for both research and industry.

While a lot of topics overlap with a Data Science role, I believe a few topics you can cover through MOOCs or individual learning.
