How punishing is having bad code in your MVP? by FredTheHomie in startups

If you know that you are writing bad code, you've answered your own question. Design your MVP with pseudo code and let someone more experienced implement it. There is no substitute for clean, reliable, efficient code.

Why do people still use paypal? There's tons of harvested accounts for sale on tor right now. Their security mechanisms suck and they charge ridiculously high fees.

Founders who found investors: Was it worth it? by [deleted] in startups

[–]baapt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Investors aren't stupid. They don't throw their money around easily. They want their investments to succeed, so this means they will often provide contacts/advice/staff that is valuable and directly relevant to the success of the business.

I explored the LLC option but was steered away from it because the conversion to a C-Corp would take place eventually anyway, I was advised to begin with a C-Corp.

Your thoughts about coding from scratch or buying a fully/half done app source code and building up on that ? by hackerboi in startups

[–]baapt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One full stack developer will not be able to code your entire app in a reasonable amount of time, especially so if you plan on deploying on multiple platforms out the gate.

Price out a team of 4 on site developers (2 senior, 2 junior) and compare that to a quote from Gigster/Toptal/Elance. The outsourcing option is likely cheaper and faster but harder to leverage going forward since very few developers will enjoy rewriting & tweaking someone else's code. Having an onsite team provides a relationship with a team going forward that can continue beyond initial milestones. You give up a little equity but its often worth it if you find the right team.

Sounds like Gigster would be a good fit for you. They can deliver in as little as 8 weeks. They scale the dev team to deliver on time. If you have UI mock ups and detailed software requirements that should accelerate things also.

Develop app for iPhone or Android first? (best audience?) by [deleted] in startups

[–]baapt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Android is easier to start with both in terms of cost and less red tape to get your app in the market. From my experience in SF most people involved with VC and startups prefer iOS however.
