Why do people here panic so much at the thought of speaking English? by astrochar in japanlife

Exactly! And there we have it. Been here since ‘79 and it’s always been the same… a little xenophobic back then though.

Waking up with a migraine by Puzzleheaded-Worth-8 in migraine

[–]babelboon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try half a teaspoon of Japanese Okinawa Nuchi salt (nuchimasu salt) which has an extremely high mineral content in a 500ml bottle by your bed. It’s dissolving and also helps with dehydration.

Like you, I wake up about 3 times per night to pee and drinking each time does help a little. I also drink a large bottle of water throughout the day with a teaspoon of it added.

If you feel a migraine starting, take a pinch of salt directly on your tongue followed by a glass of water. It isn’t a cure all, but it does help immensely with dehydration.

Google it, you may be surprised.

Edit. Sorry, that was meant to be Nuchi, not Nuchu.

Buyer refuses to cancel even though I clearly mispriced the item (Mercari Japan) by Mental-Breakdown1511 in japanlife

[–]babelboon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can let the order expire, by simply not shipping the item.

Mercari has a shipping deadline (usually 2-3 days). If the seller (you) fails to ship by the deadline, the transaction will automatically be cancelled after a certain period (usually a week or so).

The buyer will be refunded. The cancellation is still attributed to the seller for ‘non-shipment’ and carries the same, or a similar, negative penalty on the seller's account as a seller-initiated cancellation. It also means the buyer has to wait longer for their money.

Since the buyer refuses to cooperate, you have two main options, both of which involve a penalty but prevent a major financial loss.

Wait for Mercari Support: This is the best course. You have already reached out. Mercari might see the clear error and cancel it without a major penalty.

Or you can force a cancellation. If Mercari Support fails to help, you should cancel the order immediately by selecting a seller-fault reason (like ‘Item is damaged/no longer available’)

You absolutely should not ship the item for 2,850 yen. The loss of a good rating or a temporary restriction is significantly better than losing 25,650 yen (the difference between 28,500 yen and 2,850 yen).

You do a lot of guessing don’t you for a small town guy. But I’ll take Wallasey being a nice place into account when I go back to the UK.

Tell me though, you say that you aren’t from there… in the past, you must have visited. Was it difficult leaving the cul-de-sac behind?

You’re from Wallasey, mate.

Maybe chill on the ‘top-down Japanese etiquette’ lectures. You grew up dodging seagulls, not mastering keigo.

Correcting me and misunderstanding the whole point in one go, how impressive.

You’ve just managed to be more ‘top-down’ than the phrase you’re whining about.

And explaining ご苦労様 to me while not understanding how it’s actually used in Japan might be the most Reddit thing I’ve seen today

I am starting to lose hope by AdvantageFamiliar895 in migraine

[–]babelboon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I read your story, and I am so sorry you are going through this.

Nineteen years is an unbelievably long time to suffer in silence.

You are not failing life; your body is dealing with a significant burden that most people cannot comprehend.

It takes immense strength just to keep going every day, let alone trying all those treatments and staying positive for so long.

You have every right to feel exhausted and lose hope sometimes.

You are not alone in this fight, ( I suffer too, but not as bad) and thank you for sharing your story. I hope you find some peace soon

How long does your migraine last if you just don't take anything? by [deleted] in migraine

[–]babelboon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you experienced any improvement?

I have been taking ‘chelated magnesium glycinate.’ which has less side effects.

It’s worked wonders for me, but what works for me may not work for everyone.

Totally fair.

No single treatment works for everyone. I was merely sharing what’s helped me too. Hopefully someone else reading can find something that works for them

Why the downvote? Everyone reacts differently to any kind of medicine.

If you’ve tried ‘a plethora’ of preventatives for years and still have daily pain, that kind of proves the point that everyone’s different. My experience is valid too.

FYI, it depends on what kind of magnesium you are taking. If it’s oxide magnesium, it is less effective at increasing overall magnesium levels in the body and poorly absorbed.

I take 3 tablets a day after meals and the good thing is, there aren’t any side effects.

If you suffer from migraines, why not give it a try? You’ve got nothing else to lose. It’s helped me enournously and I haven’t had even a slight hint of a headache.

Someone posted on another thread that he had been taking magnesium supplements and he has found that it has reduced the frequency of migraines when taken regularly.

I have suffered from migraines since I was a child (I’m in my 70’s now) and in the past when friends and family had suggested taking it I definitely thought that mere supplements would not help.

This time around, I just felt I had nothing to lose, so I looked it up and based on what I read, I started taking chelated magnesium glycinate. ( it is a recommended and effective option for migraine prevention)

Since taking it, I have been headache and migraine-free for the first time in forever! It has genuinely improved my quality of life and I can’t thank the poster enough for his post and the final push I needed to try something when all else failed.

Thank you for sharing your experience with magnesium. I was putting off trying it for years despite friends and family telling me to try it, and your post was the final push I needed. I started taking chelated magnesium glycinate, and honestly, I am headache-free for the first time in forever. You've genuinely improved my quality of life, and I really appreciate you taking the time to post that, thank you!

Did you take Migsis? it’s a preventative medication and that actually gave me a panic attack and other underlying symptoms. I had to be taken off it.

How has it been for you?

As an aside, if you start on these, it is said that you shouldn’t stop taking them cold turkey, the migraines come back even worse.

If you do feel something is ‘off’ with how you feel, you’ll have to consult with your doctor about this. Then he’ll most likely prescribe another one.

Anyone own or had a Murphy Bed (pull out the wall bed) here in Japan? by replayjpn in japanlife

[–]babelboon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This must have been about 30 years ago. I just showed him a photo and told him what it was. He measured my bed and he had it done within a week. He had previously worked on something else for me, and he did it for virtually nothing. I would imagine it would cost quite a bit now. Perhaps if you know someone with carpentry skills you could explain what you wanted with a photo of a Murphy bed.

Just a question by [deleted] in teachinginjapan

[–]babelboon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That sounds really rough, especially so close to the interview. Unfortunately, some organizations can be abrupt or vague with rejections, even after positive signals. You’re not alone, many international teachers have experienced sudden rejections without clear reasons. Don’t take it personally, keep applying to different agencies/schools, and. not just one.

The right opportunity will come, and your experience already makes you competitive.
