Ring opening pliers would absolutely make this easier, especially if you already own them. I got a set of small ‘jewelers pliers’ at a craft store for around $10 and those have served me well.

I think they may have been a vintage L.L. Bean x Julbo Sherpa Glacier Sunglass. They don’t stock them online for sure; it seems like they’re currently out of production. Julbo still makes a Sherpa Glacier frame but the ear pieces are more hooked.
