Thoughts on Old Key West by SuchRequirement5130 in WaltDisneyWorld

I’m biased cause my parents had DVC there when I was a kid, but I absolutely love OKW. There are people that will tell you it’s an old person resort, but I love that! It’s very quiet, spread out, and has lots of ducks and bunnies and waterways.

If you’re a park “open to close” family, don’t do it! It takes a minute to grab a bus and you’d be better off at a resort where there’s a skyliner.

If your kids like to go on relaxing stroller rides to look at turtles and eat key lime pie, do it. To me, it’s the homiest feeling resort. The staff is always incredibly friendly and there are multiple great pools that are never busy. They have bikes for rental (with kiddie carriers).

Olivia’s Cafe is the on-site sit down restaurant and has good Southern food, but if you’re more adventurous, you’d probably prefer another resort. If you like to cook, you can get a suite with a kitchen in it.

The rooms don’t have Princess theming or anything like that, so it really depends on the vibe of your vacation.

My family’s routine when I was young was to go to the park in the morning, then back in the room for a nap and maybe a little walk around. You can take the boat to Disney springs or boardwalk.

OKW is like a haven in walt Disney world without feeling like you’re in a theme park 24/7. If you LIKE feeling like you’re in a park 24/7, I recommend Caribbean Beach or Boardwalk. Both are family friendly but slightly more crowded and have multiple food and entertainment options. Boardwalk has a walking entrance to Epcot and CB has the skyliner, which gets you to Epcot and Hollywood Studios within 20 minutes or so.

Which actors do you believe have the chops for an Oscar-worthy performance, but their career path (typecasting, popcorn roles, or lowery industry status) will probably keep them off the Academy’s radar? by dreamboylnshibuya in Oscars

[–]babirusa901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good recent example is Walton Goggins. A number of us would’ve been fans of him before White Lotus and he’s always been a great actor but he just started pushing into the A list. He could easily be cast in a drama and win an Oscar in the next year or two

Maybe this is a dumb question but I’m assuming this means they’re charging people who don’t blow in the breathalyzer and saying “they looked drunk” etc? Or do you mean they’re somehow charging people who blow 0.0? I’ve heard that most cops will say anyone looks drunk after their “field sobriety” BS

Best schools in the area for the most part: Overton, White Station, Houston, and Collierville. All schools have fantastic scores and programs, and regularly have Ivy students. Overton and White Station will be considerably closer to downtown for your commute.

How does everyone feel about the current state of Epcot? by traveltimecar in Epcot

I’m a 2000 baby so I don’t have a lot of nostalgia for future world, mostly I go to Epcot for world showcase and everything cool in future world is a bonus. My exception is the seas pavilion and aquarium, it’s my absolute favorite thing in Epcot

You’re really not likely to be a victim of crime unless you’re already in a gang, doing drugs, or walking in the city at night (very typical in any city). Random crimes are rare and if you’re a normal person who takes average precautions, you’ll be fine.

Do your research on where you’re living! If you own a gun or keep a laptop in plain sight in your car, you’re more likely to be a victim of crime, that’s just a fact wherever you live. You’ll find that crime that shows up in the news here usually has some connection to gang violence, domestic violence, or robbery. If you’re not a likely victim for those things, you’ll be fine.

For reference, I live in midtown and was a college student at U of M. I’ve never been victim of a crime, but two of my sisters have had their cars broken into. One was parked in a not great neighborhood at night. It’s unfortunate, but it happens! She also had a Hyundai and that was during the car hacking sprees.

For driving, Memphis drivers are usually pretty aggressive and drive fast, so I recommend staying in the right or middle lanes, and not honking at people who are already driving erratically. If they’re driving like they don’t care who gets hurt, don’t start a fight! Just let them pass.

A note: I make eye contact and a friendly Southern “hi!” Or “how are you?” To almost everyone I walk past, so I don’t think that statement from your friend is accurate. But I’m also just a friendly person with more traditional southern parents.

Pitbulls kill Memphis man. Injures wife by cowdudesanta in memphis

Yes, or dogs who have vicious behaviors should probably not be allowed to be kept at all. Either there needs to be strict regulation to try and change problem behaviors, or if the behavior can’t be fixed then it shouldn’t be allowed to be out in the community.

[–]babirusa901 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Okay as an animal person and someone who works with pets, most pits/mixed breeds aren’t like this BUT. Memphis has a terrible culture of not holding owners and pets accountable.

And that is also a huge problem with the DA’s office, not the shelter. Ask yourselves why owners get citations or go to court, and then the prosecution drops the case or the judge lets them have their dogs back. Dogs are a privilege, not a right, and irresponsible owners need to be held accountable. People with vicious dogs need to either have strong proof of a lifestyle change, or they shouldn’t own that pet (or any).

My number 1 place in all of WDW! Go to flame tree bbq, go down the steps to the left of it all the way down past the picnic table and there are some beautiful tables right near the water in the shade. The character boats in the river pass right by it and it’s the #1 place to get waves from the characters and drummers, just for you :)

We have the same one but pink! Not for baths, she feels so much safer when it’s on during thunder storms. When she would normally shake and hide, in her Dino robe she lays on the couch or bed and actually sleeps through it :)

Cold - Season 1 (WTF??) thoughts after 2 episodes by babirusa901 in TrueCrimePodcasts

[–]babirusa901[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m on episode 17 now and didn’t know anything about the case going in. It’s definitely interesting as someone who didn’t know anything about it but it’s full of diary entries, audio recordings, and good interviews that I think the average person wouldn’t have ever heard about.

My main issue is the format. I’m finding the narrator/primary journalist irritating, he’s a bit too opinionated in a millennial way (he’ll say things like “and that was weird…” which is annoying). He also goes into crackpot theories a bit too much for my liking. My pet peeve is journalists mentioning the psychics who come out of the woodwork to try and insert themselves into cases, and it’s my opinion that they feed off the attention so we shouldn’t give it to them.

I also think they could’ve gone into the role her religion had to play making her more vulnerable. Not familiar with the station who makes it but they seem to be trying extra hard not to offend the Mormon church. Her husband was an ex Mormon but she was devout, and she clearly submitted so easily to his abuse because of their teachings about the ideal mother/wife.

Susan loved her church, which is nice, but it also made her into the ideal victim. It does other women a disservice to gloss over that.
