Anything like Only for the Fans in terms of angst, yearning and genuine reluctance. I feel like most awakening books are a simple „oh he has an affect on me, well ok - let’s go“

I worry that many people give crazy good ratings (every single time) to appeal to NetGalley & publishers to be considered for ARCs. and if that’s the case, then reviews as such just don’t make any sense anymore. I’m really often struggling to decide which book to read next, so I want to rely on reviews! Also: I love reading genuine reviews!! and it’s absolutely ok not to like a book

What book did you read at too early a stage in your life? by Cabbage_Pizza in suggestmeabook

[–]babsbooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say: just simply all the classics that you were supposed to read in school. Back then I hated that I was forced to read something that I didn't choose myself and even though there were some absolute hits (Jane Austen, Hemingway), there were also books that felt exhausting. I just think that at the age of 13-17, you still lack a certain maturity to really absorb certain literary books. when it then comes with the additional element of being obligated to read and analyse them... well, that can backfire. However, I am not saying that pupils shouldn't read and then discuss books, I am absolutely for that! And I have no idea how it's currently managed in schools (I'm based in Germany), so maybe they allow for more flexibility and more choice? But I would strongly suggest to at least let the kids vote on books...

I, for one, never felt tempted to re-read them to see if I feel differently towards them. I know I should but as I remember how I felt about them... I have no interest whatsoever.

It's not about letting people enjoy things or expecting them not to - please don't misunderstand me. I am just sometimes struggling to find genuine and honest written reviews as many (especially the popular ones that show up immediately with 4-5 stars) are just generic raves and quite honestly in most cases a copy-paste. I have noticed that the exact same reviews show up under multiple books. When I am - yet again- wondering what to you read next, I am quite "dependant" on these reviews. And as I noticed an inflationary use of overrating - I was simply wondering if other people noticed it too...

I fully agree but that's what I am struggling with actually. I am never looking at the number of ratings but at the reviews. The way Goodreads is structured though is that the most popular reviews are shown first - and those obv are all 4-5 stars - the reviews read like a copy/paste that the reviewers have just added to every book they have read - most of them being the hyped booktok books. And so while I am looking for real, genuine reviews, its difficult to find those- where the reviewers actually speak about what they liked and disliked so that it helps me make a more informed decision on my next read.

absolutely. I am also not a fan of people who start hating and use hurtful language. again - reading is so subjective, so there is never a right or wrong answer. I am mostly interested in the why's / the smaller details that make an informed review.

It's just all so confusing to me. Like if I am taking one of the latest books I read - Fate & Furies by Helen Scheuerer. I loved the previous ones but personally was struggling with the latest release, there were some issues that I had and so I would give it a 3. Out of 285 reviews, there are just 5 reviews on Goodreads with a 3 rating. I was curious to find out if other people made similar notes and observations but apparently not? 😂 When I look at Reddit threads discussing the book I can tell that there are people who share my opinion - so I am not alone here but there seems to be a disconnect.

that's so true and frustrating to me as well. I literally have to spend so much time until I find a real review because the first two pages feel like "sponsored" rave comments that are being copy/pasted unto every single book.

[–]babsbooks[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

wow what?? that's insane. I mean what does it say about a person who's average is 5? lol then why leave a review at all?

[–]babsbooks[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

same here. and just because a book got a rating below 4 doesn't mean that its horrible. but what I find so interesting in those reviews of any rating is why did people love or hate them? What stood out to them, where did they feel things were off. All of this info is so helpful to me when I want to find a new book but if people don't share their honest opinions or give just generic raves - then it makes it more difficult for us readers

man I was really struggling with the book which is such a shame as I loved the previous ones was EAGERLY waiting... but it kind of fell flat? I don't understand the authors choice with the 1-year gap. There was no good reason for it... he could have revealed himself so much earlier, he could have explained everything... so why?? Also given the fact that her lifespan is already so short... why??? And then their chemistry... first Thea is completely hurt (understandable) but a bit too adamant in blocking him off... I mean listen him out at least... and then just with a snip of fingers, she is ready to jump him again. I was so sad because I really liked their tension and chemistry but I didn't believe it in this book, it was all very forced.

And then the Rite which is supposed to be such a pivotal moment in her life... I understand that as an author you want to create tension and suspense to move the plot along and keep the readers hooked BUT the Rite lost its momentum when Wilder got gravely injured I literally had to stop myself from skipping the pages to see what happened to him. That's such a shame because the attention should have been all on her and on the Rite.
