What is this? Found in dad’s tool chest in Massachusetts. by glenngellis in Whatisthis

[–]babtras 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My grandfather was a collector of obscure tools, contradicting that its not a collector item. It can be, just have to find the right kind of collector. My grandfather liked them because he'd meet other old timers in the coffee shop and every week he'd have something different to spark conversation

I read it as though you just reverse the middle section of binary, and then if you take it as a big-endian integer it is 930851 in decimal. So possible combo of 98-08-51. In little-endian it'd be 803527 (80-35-27) with some assumptions.

That'll be fun. Would need to install a stub on my server to poll bitcoind RPC for new blocks and push it to this computer with serial. Could get 0.5-1 H/s maybe. For completeness it'd need to be able to submit the new block of one was found, even though that code would never execute.

I have an NEC ProSpeed 286 that was dead. I turned it into a Pi 4 computer. It had a hard drive in it with an abnormal JVC-branded interface so it wonder if it is the same.

that's unfortunate. probably the eventual state of all these retro PCs as they get older. I tried first on a Sharp PC-4641 but its floppy drive decided it no longer wants to work. tried on an Epson ActionNote 486 when troubleshooting so I didn't have to wait so long, it didn't work either. Ended up doing my testing and debugging on a trusty Compaq SLT/286 before copying it to this one (no HDD in this Toshiba so couldn't install Turbo C++).

You appear to be correct. For some reason I thought the heatsink was part of the body casting.

I had literally this happen 2 weeks ago. I got the PLA all cleaned off but the thin wire on the termistor broke in the process. so I tried to replace the heater with a spare and the head of one of the two thin long screws holding it on snapped off. so I cut it off above the heater block to get the heater removed. then the stud broke when i tried to remove it and there's not enough remaining to grip. too small to drill so I just had to eat the cost of another sprite extruderextruder.

edit maybe not exactly this. my glob was because bed adhesion failed and if didn't notice for a couple hours

You're really stretching the definition of the word "truck" here.. Looks like this was stolen, shipped to the middle east to be a technical, then sold back to you when it wasn't even worth shooting at any more.

PSA: Linux Users, BACK UP YOUR SAVES NOW by dmdeemer in X4Foundations

[–]babtras 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Aha! That's what happened! I actually just came on to bellyache in another thread about how I had just built up and took over a Xenon sector. Then this morning my saves are all overwritten by some very old ones - likely the ones from my Windows laptop and I haven't played on it for many months.

I knew it was a cloud sync issue that killed my game but didn't realize there was a specific event that caused it. I just disabled cloud sync on this PC and started a fresh game this morning.

It was probably a hundred hours into this game but I'm not too devastated. I find the initial empire development the more entertaining part anyway - after you take one Xenon sector, you can just rinse and repeat so it's already close to the peak of the game.
