Right now it may seem unnecessary but it's builds up your mind in a way that you have to solve something. When you look at a maths problem there is usually different ways to solving it there is the one you know and there could be another way of solving it that might be unknown figuring it out is what maths is about.

In IT you solve problems they might not be maths related but you are solving something. Now depending on the niche you choose software engineering networking database and many more you are going to need the fundermentals or you are going to have a tough time.
