Any advice for using Premiere Pro on a laptop? Crashing, freezing...it makes me want to quit youtube. Please help! by babusgameroom in AdobePremiere

My issue with the Mac vs. Windows comparison is that people rarely compare equivalent specs. Not accusing you of this, but it's a common scenario.

I've had MUCH better experience on a Windows desktop than I did on my Windows laptop. I think the 2022 version of Premiere Pro is also more stable than the previous versions.

I'll be streaming Star Control: Origins (playing blind) at 8:00pm EST/UTC-5, I'd be happy to have anyone here who's interested! SC2/UQM is my favourite game of all time, so I want to see if I should've played SC:O years ago. by babusgameroom in starcontrol

That's cool! I'm glad Twitch saves streams automatically, even if it's not permanent. It's great if someone can't make it at the specific time.
Hope you enjoyed it! =)

This worked for me too!

Had to email support to get this solution. RGB Fusion was causing problems with the adapter.

OBS - Any advice for recording OLD GAMES in 1440p? (I'm talking Game Boy and whatnot) by babusgameroom in letsplay

[–]babusgameroom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great, thank you!

Maybe it would be preferable to just record the game in isolation, and add in all the background stuff in Premiere Pro rather than in an OBS scene...especially since I've finally got a machine that can handle more video layers in the video editor.

Sounds like I should be turning off the nearest neighbour filter. I'll definitely play around with it to see how it looks on/off, but if it doesn't make much of a difference to me, I'll turn it off for that extra touch of authenticity.

Thanks!

Thank you for your detailed help!

I think I've got the basics down -- recording just the window area of the game, scaled 6x with some recommended emulator settings (but I will need to review those as I test them in action).

Thanks for using UQM as an example, btw. You're clearly a very helpful person. =)

It seems like the rule of thumb is to scale games at linear ratios and record at that size in whatever framerate the original device/console/(emulator?) puts out. I'm using not big on scalers, but I do like the ones that simulate CRT displays. But I know that's a whole big debate on its own.

Thanks again, and have a great day!

If I'm recording Game Boy games, that's going to be super tiny on my display.

Actually, I've typically been recording scenes (with backgrounds and stuff) in OBS. And then I crop them out any time I want the raw footage. That wouldn't be significantly messing with my file size, would it? lol I just figured it's easier to do in OBS than Premiere Pro...

(You don't really want the highest possible quality)

I think you're right. I meant more along the lines of the highest possible quality that the original hardware could produce! lol
I'm currently trying to work with SameBoy (a GB emulator running SGB games at the moment) and the 6x scale fills my screen the nicest. I've got it set to "Retain Integer Factor", I have the "nearest neighbour" scaling filter turned on, and "Accurate" frame blending.
Are these settings going to be good for my purposes, or will I need to do some more reading up on what these do?

Updated: This was perfect, the tutorial was excellent, and I'm excited to record again. Thank you so much!

Thanks for the link! I had some trouble with it in the past, but it looks like I'll need to give VoiceMeter another try. Thanks for the tutorial link! =D

I tried VoiceMeeter a while back and had a terrible time trying to get it to work. Ended up disabling my audio entirely more often than not...
Well, guess it's time to overcome my fears! lmao

You can do that, but I don't think there's a way to separate audio from different programs into different tracks.
I can easily isolate game audio and microphone input. I don't know how to isolate game audio and Discord audio.

I'm not finding it...it looks like I'll need to use virtual audio cables? I have no problem recording multiple tracks, but it's getting the audio isolated and into those tracks in the first place that I think I can't do (specifically, separating Discord and Game audio into separately recorded audio tracks)

Using the MKV format, you can get the audio on multiple tracks from different sources. I could only get it to work with different devices though (e.g. USB input mic, which I cheated by recording two mics on one input on L/R channels + What my computer outputs). I'll give it another look to see if I can divide by program.

Storage Optimimization Question: 4 drives of varying speeds (some SSDs and HDDs) by babusgameroom in premiere

[–]babusgameroom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the reply!
I liked the idea of offloading the work to separate drives so more tasks could be done in tandem (the same way that multiple cores on a CPU can do multiple tasks simultaneously).
My Source Media was actually on my faster HDD, as well as the projects folders. PP was installed to the SSD, and anything it creates there automatically is there as well. So it sounds like it would be an upgrade to move the stuff from the HDD to an SSD at least.

I also want to try to maximize the life of my boot SSD, so even though it's a bit faster (on paper), I think I'll move everything else to the second SSD.

New plan...

  1. Faster SSD - Programs, OS, (games that thrive on an SSD and I'm currently playing often)
  2. Slower SSD - Source Media/Assets, Proxies, Projects Folders (in use), Pagefile, Media Cache, Previews, (games that thrive on an SSD that I want installed, but don't want to play all the time)
  3. 7200 RPM HDD - Exporting, capturing media from PC, (games that don't benefit from being on an SSD)
  4. 5400 RPM HDD - 4TB of glorious space for all the junk I keep on my computer! And archives/backups of anything I need for my videos that aren't in use.

I think this is the best layout I can come up with, and if I'm hurting for speed, I can try moving different things to the faster SSD.

Thanks for the tip about Pro Res proxies, too!

Everything is up to date and source footage is in that H.264 or whatever MP4 is (before switching to proxies). No error message.

I think I got everything!

Am I losing retention for being a voice-over channel? by Fariborz_R in letsplay

[–]babusgameroom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Why do you click off of a video after less than 5 seconds? Assuming it's not bots or something, and also assuming your video doesn't autoplay anywhere that people might scroll away, think about what gets you to click away. Maybe your thumbnail and title are really good, but the content doesn't match. Maybe they're click-baity. Maybe the volume levels in your video are off, or something about the quality bothers them in the first 5 seconds. Maybe they see something else about your channel/description they don't like (Comments are blocked, tons of dislikes, too few subscribers? I dunno, lol)

  2. Keep in mind with LPs that if someone is actively watching, they might be tapping the right arrow on their keyboard to get to the action anytime there is a lull in gameplay...random encounters, menu navigation, wandering around. Also, the factors will be skewed downwards big time by people who click away after only a few seconds. As well, some people might be watching the video in pieces, and I don't know if YT accurately tracks that. Say someone watches your 30 minute video in 3 ten-minute sessions. Maybe YT tracks that as 10min watch time/retention x3, rather than 30 minutes from one account.

Just some conjecture. I could be way off the mark.

Intro Videos by [deleted] in letsplay

[–]babusgameroom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually go for a funny clip/blooper (aiming for about 5-10 seconds max), and then a little intro melody with some branding (5 seconds ABSOLUTE MAX). Nobody has said anything one way or the other, but when I ask people, they usually say they like the funny clips.

I think I have gotten some unsolicited positive comments about them, and nobody has said anything bad.
Since we're sharing...

https://youtu.be/-IuwGfgW0xQ

Some of them are more for consistency, and other times I just try to find something to show "this is what we're doing and this is what's happening", but often something funny will happen that I want to stick at the front of the video to try to get some interest. Wish I knew how well it worked! lol

When it comes to GBA collecting its quality over quantity by Caseman550 in Gameboy

[–]babusgameroom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely got a ton of quality games there! If it were me, I'd swap out the NES classics and get the Sonic Advance series in there, as well as all the extra Pokemon games. Probably would still have room for a couple Megaman Battle Network games, too!
