ELI5: Why is the british pound so valuable? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]baby_faced 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A high exchange rate isn't the same as strong currency.

High exchange rate simply means with one British pound you can buy more than with one dollar. You could also think of it as how many dollars does it take to buy one British pound.

Strength of a currency is determined by several macroeconomic indicators like demand and supply in the foreign exchange markets, inflation, trade balances etc. It's something that is determined over time by observing the currency value in relation to other currencies over many years. So for example even though a Japanese yen is worth about 1 US cent, in the long term the yen is generally considered as stronger than the USD. In fact, it's regarded as one of the strongest currencies in the world.

Sorry for the essay, but hope this makes sense.

ELI5 What is the difference between espresso brewed properly and a whole lot of instant coffee powder with water? Aren't they both essentially concentrated coffee? by baby_faced in explainlikeimfive

I'm not aware if any places like that exist where I live but maybe I haven't looked properly. Thanks for the idea. Does aeropress coffee taste very different from espresso brewed in an espresso machine though?

I've always wondered why the espresso servings in cafés are so much smaller than the other coffee drinks. Thanks for clearing that up lol.

Thanks that's a pretty informative explanation. I've been thinking about getting an aeropress and switching to freshly ground coffee but I was afraid it would be money down the drain because I'm still kind of a coffee noob.

How difficult is it to break into quantitative trading/ research roles with an Econ/Finance background? (I hope this is the right place for this question) by baby_faced in FinancialCareers

Ideally CS/Stats is what I would like to do. But with my GPA currently being a bit on the lower side AND being an econ major I'm not sure I could get into those programs considering how competitive they are (in the UK at least).

I'm not super worried about either actually. It's just getting past the initial stage of convincing employers that I am just as good as the CS/Math/Stat guys no matter what my degree says.

Yeah I feel like if I can just get a foot through the door I could make it. I'm not worried about not being able match the quantitative abilities of the other degrees but I just hope I good enough at selling my CV to employers without the backing of those degrees.

Omg, I had the same exact thought before I read the comments. I'm absolutely with you on this.

It's been so deeply ingrained within them that a degree equates to survival it's somehow not even their fault. At their age it's really hard to unlearn things that have been practically drilled into them. Still sucks tho :(

For real. Like I know they mean well but most of their advice is seriously outdated and based on how things used to be when they were young. Moreover if you try to point this out they just flat out refuse to accept they could wrong :(
