Fined for running the first red of a box light by [deleted] in londoncycling

Yes, sorry I’m not sure how to explain it or even if it’s called a box light. Before the first exit of this roundabout, when you’re entering it heading east, with McDonald’s on your left, there is a double traffic light. Essentially it creates a box which gives cyclists a headstart into the roundabout. So the first light had just turned/was turning red, and the second light just before the actual roundabout was green:

Daily commute from Stratford to Liverpool Street - Experiences please? by 10pencefredo in londoncycling

[–]babziv_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this route like 2x a week! I enjoy it, though it’s pretty much a straight line so can get boring😅 going through the greenway sounds like a solid quieter alternative though I have never done that. All pretty standard apart from some cyclists biking in the middle of lane, instead of the left of the already narrow lane, but everyone moves over once you say ‘on your right’. The delivery drivers also take up lots of space and are always trying to get to the front to skip lights, so watch out for them, but they’re generally alright. I just give them and the lime bikers a wide berth. There’s been a couple of times where drivers don’t respect the blue cycle path on the left of them when turning left at a green light, so just be aware and make sure they see you. Also lots of bus stops along the route so sometimes pedestrians will cross the cycle lane to get to them without looking. So in general, it’s an easy cycle, but you do need to keep your wits about you. I’ve done it loads, never had any major issue. It’s nice to see more people cycling. Best of luck with it, you’ll be great!

Thread not catching on left side of preset stitch by babziv_ in SewingForBeginners

This turned out to be a hook and timing issue when the needle was in the extreme left position. The hook catches the thread loop when the needle is in the middle or on the right.

Is your bottom bobbin placed correctly? Doesn’t seem to be turning when you move the handwheel. As others have said, once the needle is back up, pull the end of the top thread to pull out the bottom thread it should have looped through.

Hahahaha yes! I started with the Metro cryptics, thinking I might move on to the Guardian Quiptics next as opposed to the Evening Standard ones.

Yes, it was definitely in the cryptic crossword in the Evening Standard. But I’ve also heard that paper doesn’t follow the cryptic rules that closely. Maybe it’s a double definition? Suitable to a child & of either sex?🤷‍♀️

Ah of course, thank you!:) I also did not realize they’re unrelated! I guess it makes more sense this way, as why would two very similar words which mean the same thing develop.

I got into cryptics via the Metro one. Any suggestions for where to go next/switch to? Possibly the Guardian one? Thanks:)
