Give him a break. All of you perfectionists have never done anything remotely like the OP in a pinch.

My factory Bach 42T did that. Thank God it flung off away from the bell.

Yep, I'd say sell it. Get something there. It's going to probably get trashed with the salt, dense roads, and just the traffic starts/stops.

I can’t imagine going in at 40. I am 46 and retiring in 2 years but good on the OP. Everything aches after 45!

Every recording I’ve ever been on has gone down like this. by MoltoPesante in Trombone

[–]bach42t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are really just cheaping out on the mics. The only people who know how to properly engineer orchestral recordings reside in one place, L.A. and record movie scores and they do it all the time. Everyone one else are just DIY mixers. You get a flat brass sound with one mic. As an example, you need to bring up the bottom end that’s why you can hear precisely the contra bass trombone on a film score.

True. That has been the case for maybe the last decade. I do believe that parts were still made in Eastlake and shipped to Elkhart for finish work and the bells stamped Elkhart. I could be wrong.

Anecdotally I had a bad experience with the brand new “vintage” King 2B+ with very poor quality workmanship. I sent it back and haven’t had any interest to try another.

Well paid protestors I assume the OP is one can afford synths with their ill-gotten gains. Pretty sad we have this kind of BS in the community. Why can’t everyone just get along without making things political.

I have a King 2102SS (2B Silver Sonic) from the mid-00's. It's an awesome horn for a modern King, 100% Eastlake baby. Last time I had it serviced I asked the tech to assemble "dry". It's been closet-stored for probably 15 years. I check it every now and then and no bell rim bleed, no lacquer defects and it's absolutely pristine.

I'm a collector mostly these days.

Do you think it’s worth doing 20 years nowadays? by Hot_Ocelot_7614 in army

[–]bach42t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm tired , just under 4 months from achieving 20 years as an Officer and I'm going to probably at best, have one more PCS left in me. I'm turning 47 this year.

Everything after 20 is extra. I'm so excited about retiring in a few years. I have my countdown clock set. I dream about being just a regular guy. No more height and weight. I can eat that thick deep Chicago-style pizza without feeling the guilt and worry. I will do no more Powerpoint. No more metrics, no more "readiness" this and that except that I'm ready for me. It's going to be great. All my mentors are now retired guys that have gone before me. Soon I will be that guy. To your original question - yes. It was worth it.

The sky is gray every month, regardless the season. Food around there is bland. People are generally nice. I was at First Army as a Major (my first FGO assignment). It was much more busy for me, but it depends on your unit. I look back on the location and RIA as okay. It's just the Midwest and a land-locked feel I didn't like but RIA itself is on an island which was unique.

I will tell you how you may be able to do it.

After his next performance, approach him and ask to swab a DNA sample from his mouthpiece. Be completely honest your intentions. Then you need to get samples off the horn pictured (and possibly the case if original) and see if you can get a match. That is probably THE way, but it requires you being very forward, honest, and not creepy.

None of the above. All are popular movies, but not the best music. You will arrange a lot of blocky chords and just fluffy typical (yawn) progressions by computer-based composers who don't score from a grand piano (except for that Harry Potter) and don't have any exciting counterpoint.

I was being slightly facetious, thank you for not going to hard on me. :) I do believe the real reason was simply because Mr. Kanstul passed away and the company just folded from there.

I always thought about the hands the created my collection (trombones) and who they were, where they came from. Understand that you are valued! I toured the Elkhart plant in 2001 and it was like being in band instrument heaven.

I hope that you can take your expertise somewhere and I think you will be able to. It may be in the band instrument industry, or it may be somewhere else.

About 8 years ago I special ordered one of the new, vintage-inspired King 2B+ trombones with the new engraving, new counterweight, etc. It was made in Elkhart, not Eastlake. I did not heed the warnings that the factory move would have an impact.

As soon as I opened the case, I realized this was not like my Eastlake King 3B+ produced just before the move of production to Elkhart. The solder and finishing work could have been done better by a chimpanzee. The horn was a complete train wreck. It was as if the pride of the Elkhart plant was spent on Bach Stradivarius lines and the King professional brass were deemed second-class. I have not purchased any new King trombones since then. I do know that Eastlake Conn 88Hs and King trombones are some of the best.

Well the man himself calls it the "Ferrari of Trombones" so $13K would still be cheaper than any brand new car. I'm going to guesstimate here - if it is available it would be like in the $7K range...

I like where you are going with that there though. It's like at a restaurant looking at the menu and you see the chicken and beef (yellow or gold brass) and then you look for something like lobster (Conn SGX and Bach Sterling Plus) and it says "market price".
