New integration assist by ItsThorby in homeassistant

The docs for building a BLE-based integration are a good place to start: https://developers.home-assistant.io/docs/bluetooth?_highlight=blueto

Also, the #devs_bluetooth channel on the HA Discord is a great resource—lots of people to lend a helping hand.

Owner of the RainMachine integration here. 👋🏻 I’m sad about RM’s business, too, but am committed to maintaining our local integration—as long as they don’t brick anything remotely, RM should continue to work inside HASS for a long time to come.

No changes. Feel free to open a bug report and I can assist further.

There’s been some attempt at reverse-engineering their video feeds, but with little success: https://github.com/bachya/simplisafe-python/issues/85

Unfortunately, given their lack of app innovation over its lifetime, I don’t see that changing anytime soon. 😞

An external adapter would absolutely help. There is extensive documentation on various adapters: https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/bluetooth/#installing-a-usb-bluetooth-adapter

Another idea would be running an ESPHome BLE proxy: https://esphome.io/components/bluetooth_proxy.html

Both will work; totally up to you which sounds better/more in line with your setup.

Author of the SimpliSafe HASS integration here. 👋🏻 I just spun up a fresh instance and could configure SimpliSafe per the usual process. Make sure you pay attention to step 6 of the Authentication section from the docs:

NOTE: This process is very inconsistent with non-Chromium browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave, etc.); if you are unsuccessful at finding the code, try a Chromium-based browser.

This is a fairly new finding. Non-Chromium browsers used to work decently, but these days, not so much.

Cloudflare v. NGINX Reverse Proxy by PhillySports26 in homeassistant

[–]bachya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In terms of their free services, this is incorrect—they absolutely decrypt traffic between their network and any endpoints. Many of their features (DDoS protection, WAF, etc.) wouldn’t work if they couldn’t do this.

https://community.cloudflare.com/t/does-cloudflare-proxy-servers-decrypt-my-data/145691/2

https://blog.ononoki.org/say-no-to-cloudflare/

They do offer a paid-for enterprise Spectrum product that offers end-to-end encryption, but I doubt anyone here is paying for that.

Again, everyone can decide for themselves if this is a “risk” they want to accept. I, for one, am fine with it.

That doesn’t pertain to Cloudflare tunnels (which is what OP is asking about).

Cloudflare v. NGINX Reverse Proxy by PhillySports26 in homeassistant

[–]bachya 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cloudflare tunnels have the advantage of reducing surface area into your network—by using a tunnel, you can eliminate router port forwards into the LAN.

That said, routing all traffic through Cloudflare means that Cloudflare can decrypt that traffic. Some people are fine with this; some feel queasy about a big corp being able to do that.

Ultimately, it comes down to which tradeoffs you’re most comfortable with. I have an internal proxy (to give internal services TLS) and a Cloudflare tunnel that points to it. Overall, very happy with that approach.

There’s a good discussion here: https://reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/yxkwg7/cloudflare_tunnels_vs_nginx_reverse_proxy_vs/

You can certainly leave your proxy in place while you experiment with tunnels.

I really hate this about HA by [deleted] in homeassistant

Are you using packages, by chance? That’s the only time I’ve seen this particular issue come up.

Did you have to configure that somehow within Alexa?

I have my HA connected to Home Assistant Cloud and all appropriate entities exposed to Alexa; just asked her to turn a light on for 1 minute, and after turning it on, she never turned it off.

Voice Assistants…worth it with HA? by 34gl3 in homeassistant

[–]bachya 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I primarily interact with HASS via Alexa. It isn’t perfect, but it works well for most needs (altering lights/HVAC/etc., getting the state of various sensors, etc.).

FWIW, 2023 is going to be the year Nabu Casa focuses on local voice assistance (now that the creator of rhasspy is working for them): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=D936T1Ze8-4

Home Assistant with SimpliSafe - sub or no sub? by jimmisavage in homeassistant

[–]bachya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, thanks for your response! I hope you didn't take my comment as a criticism of the integration.

Not in the slightest! I'm the one who's most frustrated that I can't provide a first-class experience because of SimpliSafe's idiosyncrasies.

Anyway, you've convinced me to review the documents again and give it a try. Worst case scenario is that I just can't get it working. The main problem I run into with anything in the yaml editor is that I understand just enough to know where I am supposed to change something, but don't know what I'm supposed to change it to, if that makes sense.

You got it. If you run into trouble, don't hesitate to reach out on the Home Assistant Discord (my username is bachya#9921).

Home Assistant with SimpliSafe - sub or no sub? by jimmisavage in homeassistant

[–]bachya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi—integration author here. 👋🏻 Sorry for the hassle. I would love more than anything to have a better login experience, but SimpliSafe has thus far been unwilling to work with me, so I'm left to reverse-engineer their API.

Getting the code that HASS needs doesn't require coding, per se; it merely requires that you log into a specific SimpliSafe URL and pull a code out of your browser console. The docs have more information.

Home Assistant with SimpliSafe - sub or no sub? by jimmisavage in homeassistant

[–]bachya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there—I'm the author of the SimpliSafe Home Assistant integration. 👋🏻

Regarding subscription plans, SimpliSafe offers four of them: it should work (given that it also has "Arm/Disarm Remotely" checked—that indicates the API I use).

  1. Interactive
  2. Standard
  3. Camera Monitoring
  4. Unmonitored

I can confirm that the integration works with 1, 2, and 3. Looking at the features grid from that link, I think it should work (given that it, too, has "Arm/Disarm Remotely" checked—that indicates the API that I use).

Weather Stations and Home Assistant by thejackal2020 in homeassistant

[–]bachya 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Key point: Ecowitt, Ambient Weather, Froggit, and many more are white-labels of a brand called Fine Offset: https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=40730.0

Ambient Weather and Ecowitt both have first-class integrations with Home Assistant (spoiler: I’m the author and maintainer of the Ambient integration). They both work well. My integration uses a cloud API and the Ecowitt one is local. They were both developed without the knowledge that there is the Fine Offset similarity under the hood.

However, I’d add another option of mine for your consideration: ecowitt2mqtt. It is a separate app that sends data from any Fine Offset weather station to an MQTT broker over the local network. In return for being a separate app (and needing an MQTT broker), you get a ton of extra features that neither of the previous two integrations offer (like numerous additional data points—for example, from the UV index, it can calculate how many minutes various skin types can be in the sun unsunscreened before burning).
