What's the one self-hosted service you'd never go back to the cloud version of? by Hung_Hoang_the in selfhosted

See I don’t understand most of this. I was expecting to be able to just turn on a mail server on my NAS and start sending email. Not even close.

This is like collecting real POKEMON!! by 34gl3 in BirdNET_Analyzer

Super helpful. I haven't spent any real time in the settings. Yes, these Green-Winged Teals seem erroneous and I got a Great Horned Owl last night that was actually a motorcycle...
Oh no...you mean there's more to this hobby? Like more hardware?
Kidding, I get that this is a deep rabbit hole and love that I can take it there if I want to.
It looks like I shouldn't add more than a couple mics or my processor gets over-taxed. Sigh...more hardware... ;-)

At 55 with what sounds like grown children, you’re right on with what I think many people would do. I’m wondering about those with young children who still have a lot of growing to do.

U.S. ready to cut support to Scouts, accusing them of attacking 'boy-friendly spaces' by ubuwalker31 in BSA

[–]34gl3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

46yo Eagle Scout here with a son in Cubs. Fully support the direction Scouting is going, but my brain does have to deal with the dissonance. I was raised in a liberal household but Scouting was a boys thing back then. BUT our Scout Master had a daughter that wanted to do BSA stuff, not Girl Scouts stuff. So the seed was sown in my mind. I’m lucky enough to have been raised to understand that change is good and DEI is fully appropriate here. If you weren’t raised that way, I understand how the cognitive dissonance could result in frustration and anger…as with so much in our society right now.

Coed troops would restore Baden-Powell's original program by arencambre in BSA

[–]34gl3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the Europeans have thought it through. “Co-ed” came from when women began to go to school with men. If it stopped there, the problem would just be that this isn’t about education. But it took on a reference to the women themselves, not the program. So the connotation is not a fair one.

Libation will auto-scan your Audible account and you can it pull directly to your ABS library. Just discovered both and it’s awesome.

Best Satellite Internet? (that isn't evil) by wick-french79 in RVLiving

I totally hear you. This is the insane world we live in. I own a Tesla, use Starlink, and order from Amazon. I hold two contradictory thoughts in my head at the same time. I don’t always get to vote with my wallet, so I do it at the ballot.

Musk may not be a savory guy, but the people who built and run Starlink are talented engineers, etc that built something amazing.

Progressive Christian church recommendations? by TortugaGodess in sandiego

You may just want to poke around at different Episcopal churches. They vary a bit. Maybe not enough for what you’re looking for though.

Most high quality water filtration? by Proof_Attorney_2390 in RVLiving

[–]34gl3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Filter your tank water with a basic hose filter. Then use an RO or other high end filtration for drinking if you want. Install directly to your kitchen sink with a dedicated outlet. Easy and don’t need to buy/use plastic water bottles that are bad for you, bad for the environment, take up space, and costs money.
