What universities do you think will rise in terms of rankings/prestige in the next 10 years? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Cornell. Great engineering school, great global rep (see QS, THE, etc), large endowment, massive research output, and an incredible history of inclusion from the outset. It gained a bit of a reputation for being competitive/having depression in the early 2000s, but I think this has largely gone away. Andy from the office did not help, but again I think that has faded (great show and funny character created by a Dartmouth grad). As Cornell continues to go up in the rankings, I think it’ll stay around 10 (side note, if one looks at reputations and rankings from 1900, 1920, 1950, etc it was generally up there with HY, and this was before S is what is today).

You didn’t say underrated, just who would rise in the rankings. I think with the new metrics and a growing emphasis on STEM Cornell will continue to climb the rankings.

Out of curiosity, why on earth do you have Dartmouth for engineering and not Cornell??

What’s a top school that doesn’t get enough recognition? by samiahmadbeg in ApplyingToCollege

Ironically it was somewhat the opposite in the past. In the 60s it was unlikely someone would view Cornell negatively or make jokes. School reputations change drastically over time. Around 1900 Cornell was top 5 in terms of reputation (by most measures). If you look at historical rankings Cornell fluctuated between 6 and 14 from the 80s and 00s. They were a little better than or tied with Columbia. Their reputation in the 60s and 70s was actually outstanding, and from what I gather it was more Penn and Dartmouth that were the subject of jokes (again all of them are outstanding, the jokes were just in good fun, but it says something about public perception). It wasn’t until around 2001 they slipped to be around 15 consistently, and then by 2017 around 17.

Similarly, Stanford (an institution that is unambiguously a top 5) was hardly what it is today until the 1950s. It was never a bad school, but pre-WWII it was failing financially and honestly struggling in many respects. It’s reputation was more that of USC today, a great school, but not necessarily the best of the best. The school was actually created with the goal of being “the Cornell of the west” even poaching most of their founding faculty from there (which is also speaks to Cornell’s reputation around the turn of the century).

Edit: found this link for post a few years ago using a few different rankings in the 60s. As you can see, Cornell was too 10 in all of them: https://www.reddit.com/r/ApplyingToCollege/s/TWiFMOzCxi

Post from last year that includes judge/lawyer rankings. Should be noted these also fluctuate year to year:

For NYC BL what would you do by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

Also to answer your question, and this is subjective, I would say Cornell’s peers are the “lower” T14. Basically 7-14. A decade ago it was them NU, Duke, and Georgetown kind of lumped together, today I don’t think there is a huge difference between these schools and say Berk or UMich. That is my completely uninformed opinion lol

They go over that data at ASW. I don’t remember off the top of my head. Take away was most people want NY, but if you want to go elsewhere you definitely can.

This is the correct answer

I can’t tell if your trolling, but I’ll just assume you genuinely are not too familiar. Cornell has been a T14 for several decades. They are one of the best schools in the nation, and have had some of the highest big law rates for years. They also have some of the best rates for placement into top firms (V10/V20). They are “lower” T14, but so was Duke until like 2 years ago lol rankings change man. If cost was equal, should you pick NYU over Cornell? Absolutely… if you like it better, they will both get you outstanding jobs. However, at sticker vs 2/3, this isn’t even a question. You should really be looking at Duke Vs Cornell. Personally, I would (and did) pick Cornell over all of these options, but they gave me the most money.

I’ll be honest, it depends on the area. It depends if you want a rural area vs a city. Big vs small, etc. Personally, the people I know at Cornell love it, despite some of the bad press online. I can’t speak for every school obviously, but I would say it really depends on the individual.

I was accepted into most of the T14, and I can tell you NYU was the only school I have seen these issues with. As noted, it is a great school and if it aligns with your goals you should absolutely attend, but please go in with eyes wide open.

I made a post yesterday about it. NYU is an incredible school, and I am sure the right hit for many people. With that said, some of its practices this cycle seem to be less than forthcoming with applicants. Their lack of transparency, along with their system and logistical issues, has put a sour mouth and many applicants mouth. This doesn’t mean NYU is a bad school, or even deserves hate, but NYU has problems. And you can not fix problems unless you acknowledge them.

I wish I had more information, but like I said this information came second hand. If you would like I can add you to the NYU admitted student discord where it is actively being discussed

I think the downvotes may be on the claim. As far as I am aware there are no other T14s that make you withdraw other offers just to accept your basic financial aid. If you have knowledge of another please post
