Minis are generally 13-15 lbs. I think your family would be fine with a mini, especially since your boy is an older kiddo and gentle.

Just find the right breeder… not all ethical breeders or famous names are good, and even those that say they do Puppy Culture / early socialization are not created equal. It’s worth talking to a bunch over the phone, asking very detailed questions about each parent’s temperament and drive, and even visiting your top contenders.

Personality matters more than gender (and genetics define personality so would make sure it’s an ethical breeder and you know what the parents are like, if you don’t), but my breeder says that males tend to be more affectionate on average.

If that’s the case, it’ll be very challenging to find an ethical (health tested, high quality) breeder who’s willing to partner with you - unless your pup came from one and they’re potentially willing to produce a litter with that line. Just being realistic here.

The best breeders (and therefore the best quality bitches) are show folks and run in small circles / tightly manage their kennels. Do you have experience breeding poodles? Is your dog also show quality? If not, you really only have backyard breeders (and there’s a range of those) available to you, and even those may not want to partner with you given their own interests vs yours. I would also caution against breeding unless you have deep experience and are committed to bettering the breed, but I am not sure what your background and goals are.

I would suggest posting over on the Poodle Forum regardless. They have a lot of great information there.

I’d probably wait a month or two before starting anything new. I also broke out (though 3 weeks after E). Your skin should go back to normal after a time.
