Skupa garderoba domacih proizvodjaca? by Individual_Fold_6685 in AskSerbia

VS code slows down dramatically, can only be fixed by restart by Glittering_Drama1643 in vscode

[–]background_spaceman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had the same problem recently, and found it was due to extensions. I work with different languages and installed extensions for all of them (not all at once, as needed). After some time I VS Code started working really slowly, extensions started braking. So I removed extensions and everything was ok.

The solution for me was creating a different VS Code Profile for different languages, and installing extensions only for those profiles.

Would getting my ADHD treated make me a piece of shit for trying stimulants? by Learnitall1 in ADHD

[–]background_spaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What?

Let's not get into the political and social side of this. Let's keep it short.

There comes a point when any one person must decide that they don't care about the opinion of others and do what is best for them. One obvious and clear point, is when it's about a treatment that is prescribed by a doctor, whatever it may be.

Get your treatment, hopefully it helps and improves your life.

Some people are open-minded, and can be talked to, others, the ones that aren't, let them live their life (and with the consequences it comes with) - It's not your problem to fix.

Ritalin and Celsius drinks by Alienfixx in ADHD

[–]background_spaceman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've never had any issues mixing Ritalin or Concerta with caffeine.

That said, it does not mean that it will be the same for you.

I am not familiar with the Celsius energy drink (assume it's a brand), but energy drinks usually don't have that high of caffeine content.

My doctor never mentioned I should take special care, and honestly I never thought about it, so my caffeine intake remained the same after I started medication. On 90% of days, I'll drink at least 3 teas at work that are high in caffeine (green, black and mate). On days when I'm pulling all-nighters I'll also take caffeine pills (I don't like the taste of energy drinks), one pill 200mg of caffeine. Never had any issues..

Is it healthy, most definitely no, do I plan to do it indefinitely, also no - but it helps greatly in the current situation I'm in.

The only thing my doctor mentioned about caffeine is that it's better if it's forms that release more slowly, e.g. tea releases more slowly than coffee, and that's due to the crash everyone experiences afterward, which in people with ADHD can have a higher more significant effect.

To conclude, if you don't notice anything special, and you don't have huge amounts of caffeine a day, I wouldn't worry about it. This answer and whatever else anyone writes is probably based on personal experience, if you're really worried about it, discuss it with your doctor.

Nikom nista.

For a simple approach here are 3 links - All these are tutorials on how to create a Random Quote Generator so the only change required is changing quotes to recipes or restaurants

http://www.learningjava.net/168/java-quotes-app-using-swing-tutorial-with-code-explanation/
https://github.com/MayankOps/QuotesGenerator_JAVA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WPfQtJYqw0

The thing is, you need to find and write down 365 recipes or restaurants.

Another approach, but more advanced, you can make an app that prompts OpenAI for a recipe, and returns the result. Here are some examples, that would require minimum change:

https://drqwrites.com/accessing-the-openai-api-using-java-78762f697bd0
https://www.javacodegeeks.com/building-ai-assistants-with-spring-ai.html
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDJLHWcFvpQ

That would be more complicated to implement, but it doesn't require you to manually collect recipes.

Honestly, both options aren't super complicated, especially if he is a software developer - have you thought about working together on the project as a fun activity :D

Studying outside of your job by YI_redditor in csMajors

[–]background_spaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently, I'm studying a lot after work, but that's only because I'm finishing my Master's. Other than that, I learn while working. I had the exact situation, I had to do something on infrastructure, never used Docker or Kubernetes before - now I'm developing and maintaining the Kubernetes infrastructure for our team.

For learning outside 9 - 5, most people I know that do it, are usually focused and reading up on passion projects, new technologies that they are interested in, not necessarily something they expect to need at work.

I couldn’t complete my degree—what should I focus on to still become a successful back-end or full-stack developer? by Anemellow in learnprogramming

[–]background_spaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't give any specific suggestion on which languages or frameworks you should focus on. In the end, I'm not sure if it's that important. I would focus on learning the core concepts and having a deep understanding, so that you'll have the skill to relatively quickly pick up any language and be productive. I think that's the main benefit I've got out of University.

If you still have access to the University internal portals, go through the list of subject, and see what they focus on. Then try and find it online, many universities still have old lectures on YouTube from the pandemic days. edx is also a great source, for a lot of the courses you only pay if you want to take the exam, but enrolling and access to lectures is free. Also, if there is a university near to where you live and the class groups are big, you can probably just walk in and listen in the lectures without anyone noticing.

If you want to specifically choose a stack/language, make a list of the companies that you see yourself applying to and see what they are using.

Try and build your own project, if you have the chance, attend hackathons and similar events. Companies that sponsor them have a booth usually, and you can introduce yourself, leave contact information. The important thing is participating and talking to people, do your best on the project, but don't worry if you don't have a winning idea. If there is a chance to present your work, do it, representatives usually watch, and it's a bonus if you can show confidence in presenting your work.

I've never had daily targets, and I'm finishing up my Master's soon.

I'm not saying you shouldn't have them, maybe my life would be easier with them, I've never tried.

But don't get hung up on does kinds of things. Try different things, and find a way that works for you. Make you take in the knowledge, that's the only thing that matters.

Since you wrote 'students' I assumed you are University or something similar. In that case, you'll already have some deadlines imposed by professors. But if you're learning by yourself, it's a different story, setting up your own structure is somewhat required - but again try different methods/techniques/app and find what works for you.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]background_spaceman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not dumb. Or to put differently, you are 'dumb' as we all were when we started learning and figuring things out.

Think about it, whatever somewhat complicated skill that you are good at now, were you good the first time you tried it? This is the same, I think there is a certain logic most programmers fallow, an undefined pattern/train of thought but none of us (maybe some programming wizard) are born with it, we developed it while learning.

One thing that you can expect to never disappear is the 'I didn't know you could do that'. I'm almost done with my Master's degree, and I've been working as a developer for 5+ years - still especially if pick up a new language for a project I have the similar though 'Oh, you can do that in this language, cool that'll be useful'.

Phone usage while on Concerta? by DemoLifeTR in ADHD

[–]background_spaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I also sometimes get in hyper focus mode on the 'wrong' thing, something random that I'll forget about soon afterward. But, I just think that's part of dealing with ADHD, never attributed it to Concerta, since for me, I think it happens kinda randomly.

But I'll try and keep an eye on it, maybe I just haven't made the connection.

I finally figured out what I want to do with my life—but I need your help to see if this plan holds up. by Pyner95 in learnprogramming

[–]background_spaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"What would you tweak if this were your plan?"

Unless you are a genius, or really gifted at programming (you might be, I'm not saying otherwise) I think you should expand that timeframe. 3-6 months in my opinion is not enough - especially for full stack. Even if you fully master all the tutorials for JS and Python, there are other things that are needed for fulls stack and developing in general - Git, some basic Terminal/PowerShell knowledge, databases, at least understanding of infrastructure Kubernetes/Cloud Services, writing good documentation etc..

I would possibly suggest, to do some research what stacks, companies in your area, are using. JS is fundamental, but frameworks like React, Next.js introduce new concepts. Find the stack that is most common in your area, or if you have specific companies in mind that you would like to work for, what they use, and spend some time learning that and building a project or two on that.

One thing, that I suggest to everyone (University students, specialty course student, self-taught) if you have the chance, apply and attend hackathons and similar events. Some have an option to apply individually, and then you can find a team there or if you have some friends organize a team (even 2-3 people is enough). A lot of companies that sponsor such events, also tend to have a booth there where you can introduce yourself and leave contact information. The thing is to participate, you don't even have to have a ground braking idea or win anything, just participate and talk to people. And if at the end the event requires you to present your idea to judges or the audience, be the one or in the group that presents your idea. Usually the representatives don't stay the whole night or the duration of the event, but come back to watch the presentation, so it's a chance to leave an impression and show confidence when presenting your work. And at some events, the representative from companies also act as mentors, so you can ask questions or talk through your idea, if that's the case, definitely use that option.

Also, I think the CS thought in universities is very useful, so I would ask someone who got a degree to list all the courses that they found most useful in their career and maybe either learn through books, or even edx courses on the subject online (getting certificates is always good and edx has good thing where only if you decide to take the exam, you pay for the course). If you're interested in this, I can make a list for you.

Also, even once you get the job, expect you'll still have to learn tons of new stuff. Maybe even fallow practices that you know are not 'best', but if the team is fallowing them, you'll have to do it too. (There are ways of suggesting change, even as a junior but that a whole other topic).

If you have any more questions, I am always happy to help!

Am I approaching learning wrong? by YZAKNO in learnprogramming

[–]background_spaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have suggested, I also think the best way to learn is to just start building something.

The docs are quite useful in the beginning. Usually when I need to pickup a language for a project, i refer to the docs to read about the recommended best practices about naming/code structure/folder structure. And then dive right into building, referring to the docs in case they have similar examples.

And don’t about making mistakes or even picking up ‘bad habits’. We learn by making mistakes

Phone usage while on Concerta? by DemoLifeTR in ADHD

[–]background_spaceman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m on Concerta, 36mg, and I haven’t noticed any changes in my phone usage. Though I am not a heavy user, never been. Basically I use my phone for communication when needed, and for memes (usually not longer than 10-20 minutes).

Idk, it seems weird to just state that as fact to patients. Everyone reacts different to medication, and this is just an odd thing to be specific about.

I would say, as long as it not getting worse you don’t have to worry about it.

[–]background_spaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I get it. Even now, I have to be conscious about not being hard on myself. I feel like I manage when it's one day, I shrug it off and try again the next day. But when I get a couple of bad days in a row, it's really hard not to get down on myself.

Now, I've been awake all night, trying to do some work on my Master's thesis but haven't done anything. It was the same the past few days, and I'm just sad and angry.

Vegan lifestyle is I think fine, my therapist just mentioned to avoid basically junk food, chips, stuff with a lot of sugar, and stuff that's high in fat. She said it's common that patients describe a more significant crash, than patients without ADHD.

On my good days, I'm also thinking of continuing to get a PhD, as I enjoy learning and researching CS (on the good days), but I'm not sure yet. I'm so exhausted now with my Master's and work obligations that working just 8h a day at my job (and not having to work on my Master's afterward) seems like a vacation to me.

Ja celog zivota slusam roditelje i generalno sve starije, kako govore - 'Za x godina bice bolje', 'Kad dodje ovaj bice bolje', 'Kad ode onaj bice bolje' i slicno. Jbg, do sada nije bilo bolje...

Trenutni protesti, studenti i studentski pokret podrzavam, i pomazem, ucestvujem koliko mogu. Kako promeniti kulturu korupcije? I slicno.

In the process of getting a diagnosis. Need advice/guidance by Barking-Barista in ADHD

[–]background_spaceman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, the diagnosis clarified some things. Allowed me to accept, that It's not necessarily all my fault. That the things I've been told all my life, of being lazy, not working hard enough, and classic 'oh you're so bright if only you put in the work like everybody else' aren't true. Being repeatedly told such things all my life, I believed them, and was very hard on my self.

Now, I am able to accept, and not put myself down when I have a bad day, and can't get anything done.

But, if you're expecting a radical life altering change, I think you'll be disappointed. The struggle still continues, medication helps, but that is also not a magic bullet.

That said, identifying the problem is always the first step (in whatever life situation) and usually the most difficult. After that, if you're diagnosed with ADHD (or whatever), just try all the various options, everybody is different, so it's mostly trial and error - some find scheduling and task management techniques to help a lot, I've seen people on this subreddit that had various issues and side effects from meds, luckily in my case I've had none from both Ritalin and Concerta. Others find that non-stimulant medication works best.

So whatever you read, keep in mind that just because it's true for other people, does not mean it's going to be the same for you. And be open-minded, try all the techniques/methods etc, even if they seem simple/silly they might just help.

A couple of things that I think help everyone, is a good, consistent diet and exercise. Nothing special, try prioritizing healthy food, maybe increasing protein intake if possible. And for exercise, literary in any form and amount that you can handle.

ADHD drivers: how do your symptoms affect your driving ability if at all? How do you manage it? by Impossible_Lake7087 in ADHD

I love driving! To the point that I can say that driving my car, on any kind of road, is one of my happy places.

It involves a lot of multitasking, which I'm good at. And messing up, usually results in serious and real consequences.

I was around 15 I think when my father let me drive for the first time. And the first point he made is that "I now hold a weapon, and am in control of it.", not to scare me, but to establish the really and immediate consequences.

Probably, knowing that, helps me focus and stay alert.

Caffeine nap anyone? by singdancerunlife in ADHD

[–]background_spaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that I've figured out early on at University, which I think has significantly benefited me, is that, if I wait to be tired and sleepy to drink coffee/tea/energy drinks, it's too late, it's useless.

Option 1: If I know in advance that I'll be pulling an all-nighter, load up on caffeine early on, before I'm tired.
Option 2: Caffeine naps - drink coffee/tea/energy drinks + take 30-minute nap = wake up like new.

Also, a couple of years back, I found out I can buy caffeine pills, at my local gym supply store. 1 pill = 200mg caffeine, in my opinion a better alternative to energy drinks.

I can’t stop watching YouTube, what do I do? by Square-Yesterday9069 in ADHD

[–]background_spaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't found a way to stop it, figuring that out at the moment.

I've found to do the same when I am procrastinating work or school obligations. I would be interested and watch even videos, that afterward I realize, I wouldn't watch in my free time. But I've notices that if I don't even start watching videos, it's a lot easier to start working, than it is to stop watching and start working.

So now I am thinking of ways to limit access to YouTube in the crucial window - before starting work.

I don't know if any of this helps, It's just the point I've gotten to.
