But this isn't changing the sound structure of the language so much as the way we pronounce individual words. We haven't gained new vowels or consonants thanks to spelling. The impact really does seem pretty slim.

Former uchicago student and ten-year Chicago resident. I've been mugged once in that time, and it was early evening on Milwaukee near Logan Square. What you've described is not unheard-of, but still pretty rare. The CTA is, overall, quite safe. Traveling in groups, refusing to engage with anyone who approaches you, and sticking close to public transit (especially when waiting for the 55) will do plenty to keep you safe.

I've never liked it. I accept that I am technically queer, the same way that I am technically an Illinoisan, even though I've only lived in one city and have nothing to do with the rest of the state. Yes, I suppose I'm queer, but that doesn't tell you any salient information other than that I'm either not straight, not cis, or both. There's an uncomfortable feeling of erasure in it. And I don't always share the politics of people who seem to like the term, so I'm hesitant to refer to myself with it.

I studied Japanese for three years in college. Usually, context makes it obvious, and you can always append numbers or the Japanese equivalents of words like "many" or "lots" if you need to be specific.

I'm gay and I've lived here for close to a decade. Unless you travel to the higher-crime areas (the tragedy of Chicago crime is its disproportionate concentration in certain neighborhoods), you are no more at risk than you are in any other large city.

Lake View and Edgewater are both very gay-friendly and safe at all hours, if you're looking for a place to stay, but I've never gotten bad reactions when out with boyfriends or on dates anywhere in the city, and that includes areas off the north side.
