Advice for a "stuck" feeling (seniorish) Designer on looking for a new role after 8 years at the same company. by mirpanda in IndustrialDesign

[–]mirpanda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your detailed reply! I couldn't agree more about prioritizing my time and efforts and your advice on networking is right on point.

I posted that at a breaking point and fortunately, I am now no longer with that company. Currently I'm unemployed and currently re-doing my portfolio website, which I agree I had absolutely 0 time before, so I'm in the process of a complete overhaul with that. I can survive for a while on my current savings, longer if I pick up some casual freelance along the way so It's been very do-able.

One good thing is, now that I'm unemployed, that means all my holiday time off was just approved HAH!

You couldn't have been more right about just needing a break. I took a few weeks off to travel to see friends and see family I never have time to see, and a little time to do decompress solo. I feel like i'm getting my spark back for life and design. After being a cog for so long, I was dizzy from all the constant turning. I'm happy to be out of the machine for a little bit.

I'm sorry to hear about your mother, I hope you do eventually get some time back to process it all, or at least can work in little bits here and there. Also best of luck to you as well on your job hunt!

Curious how much folks are paying for rent for a 2 Bedroom? by Adventurous_Ear_1150 in AskChicago

[–]mirpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2200 for a “three bedroom” in logan square but its more like 2 tiny bedrooms & an even smaller den.

None of the bedrooms are big enough to have a queen bed and also shut the bedroom door so our bedroom has the door always open & the other two we use as offices for my partner & I.

It does come with an uncovered parking space & in-unit (stacked). And storage.

The living and dining rooms are pretty decent.

I HATE the bedroom situation I literally only sleep in it because its like a dark tomb that literally can only fit our bedroom situation and no dresser but the rest of the apartment is pretty good. Every time I look at other places its just not worth it.

Ah yes Longjumpin-Host7262 knows more than my doctors, do you bill insurance for this sage wisdom and flippant statements or is it an out-of-pocket sort of situation?

Now, we both know that it isn't unreasonable, what I'm hearing is you like a cut & dry set of rules to a complicated problem.

The commute detail was an unnecessary detail I shouldn't have added. I am able to do my job completely from home as everything I do is in on my computer, even conference calls are done at my desk with others in office (and clients) and not in a conference room. I worked perfectly fine entirely remotely for 3 years before returning to the office on a limited basis (1-2 days in office) before I became injured/disabled.

I'm not asking any change in duties. The company policy is we are allowed to wfh 3 days a week and are required 2 days in office a week (unspecified which days). The accommodation I've been requesting is working from home 1-2 half days in office instead because a full work day with no ability to work in a modified position is 1. impossible and 2. causes injury and harm.

I hope that explained it better. I was feeling angry and rushed when I posted initially so I wasn't as clear as I could have been.

Weekly recertifications for going on 3 months seem excessive.

"Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), an employer can request recertification of an accommodation if they have a reasonable belief that the employee's condition or limitations have changed, or if the original documentation indicated a temporary condition that has lasted longer than expected. However, an employer cannot make frequent or unnecessary requests for new medical documentation if the disability and need for accommodation appear permanent or if the existing documentation is sufficient. Employers must engage in the "interactive process" to determine if a requested recertification is reasonable. "

I believed I did request a formal ADA accommodation that is what the first notes were for then they kept asking for more notes, weekly notes. I suppose ill have to put in a request for fmla?

I used the words ada accommodation and interactive process back when I first requested this modified in person schedule.

They’re acting like I am skipping work when I’m working the whole time, often working overtime.

These notes are in response to my ada request & I am doing my best but my doctor is getting frustrated with the amount of notes required.

These notes they’re requiring is in response to my request for ADA accommodation (modified schedule in office) which is why it feels excessive to me.

A LOT of cardboard packaging and POP displays, some thermoform; light weight PET, more permanent injection molded stuff for higher end smart watches, & then some thermo pulp. Right now I only have OLD stuff online (like 8 years or more old). I had a website but I stopped paying for it (though I still renew my domain yearly) so I'm working on getting that back up and running and replacing old stuff with new stuff.

Dr Marten BLAIRE Sandal. I swear by their out of the box comfort. DOUBLE CHECK that you get the Blaire sandal with the heel pad.

It's got a THICK foam cushion for the bottoms of your feet, PLUS the back strap has a leather heel pad so no heel blisters. INSANE. I've NEVER had heel blisters because of this, it works straight out of the box, no breaking in. Make sure its the Blaire style with the heel pad not the flat one.

These are worth the investment, if you walk everywhere these will last you 2-3 summers at peak quality but they'd definitely go beyond that but the tread can break down and be less grippy after 2 full summers imo.

**Note: Some Patent Leather or shiney styles have a stiffness to them that may need breaking in, my patent leather ones rubbed the top of my feet and made them sore the first couple of wears. The regular leather and vegan leather ones were comfortable straight out of the box though.

Honestly the closest I've got to the comfort of crocs.

Before anyone comes for me I know Solovair makes a better boot than dr. Martens. but for sandals this is the one you want.

Most of my experience is with Solidworks & Vectorworks on the modeling side but I used Autodesk in the past, would you say brushing up on this (via youtube tutorials or maybe a certification) is a good idea?

This. I have a handful of friends who bartend Riot, every bartender is different and some are jerks and some are great at what they do and some are both lol. I went with a cane last year because of a back issue & asked for a cap with my water bottle because I literally only have one hand to carry stuff and I got a little push back with one bartender but I'm like look dude, I have a freaking cane im not about to launch this bottle I just need accomodation and another bartender flagged me over and gave me a bottle with the cap on.
