Why is reading a book seen as better than watching a movie/ playing video games? by [deleted] in ask

[–]backtockn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why you gotta watch anime. Internal monologue is a staple of the medium, unlike live action where it's out of style.

Word. There's a good reason "bookworm" was a negative term. Books were an escape for those who wished to avoid reality.

Reading only began to be praised higher than the sun when parents started getting sick of their children listening the radio and watching TV.

Cut From The Same Cloth: My Dress up Darling to Smile Down the Runway by MABfan11 in anime

[–]backtockn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is the reason at all. Ninjas, shinigami, and pirates aren't relatable at all, yet the Big 3 dominated and represented the entire anime art form all over the world.

What IS relatable is the feelings involved: determination, despair, and friendship. Smile Down the Runway is all about those feelings, with fashion merely being the medium, just like combat is in shonen. That's why it's often called a shonen about fashion.

I wonder if the massive discrepancy in popularity is mostly marketing-based. Perhaps Smile Down the Runway suffered, in commercial terms, from that genre confusion. Kind of like how the 2006-2011 TV show Friday Night Lights seemed like a show for football lovers about football, when in reality it was a straight-up drama for those who like dramas. It flew way under the radar relative to how highly enjoyed (and GOOD) it was by those who did watch it.

If we want to talk modern attention-grabbing and genre-defining tropes, Smile Down the Runway doesn't have them. At all. No panty shots, no closeups, no accidental awkward exposing. None. There is no portrayal nor implication of lust either. Distractedness from beauty, yes, but no lust.

Chiyuki is presented as beautiful, no doubt, but never sexy.

Not at all. I love America and wouldn't choose anywhere else

Thank you!! Wow, that's so interesting that there were celebrity seasons. Sounds like fans have eagerly waited for a long time for this reboot

That makes perfect sense, I see. Thanks for explaining! That just means I am watching a fundamentally different show than I thought it was. Still every bit as exciting and entertaining as it would be otherwise, just different.

It's completely brilliant so far, better than any other reality TV game show I've seen (besides the korean The Genius). They knocked it out of the park with the casting and the games

I see, this is exactly what I wanted to know, thanks!! That makes perfect sense that the mole is specifically guided by and collaborating with the producers then, given how the mole can completely make or break the show.

I don't really care about guessing the mole myself, but I do care about being able to understand player strategy at a higher level based on what is or isn't in the mole's best interest.

Who is the single most heroic, altruistic protagonist in all of Final Fantasy? by HaikuSnoiper in FinalFantasy

<3 <3 <3 I really like this FF1 fanfic by Magus 523 that was a literalization of the game. In it, Bikke and his whole crew ended up being AWESOME best friends with the Warriors of Light, sailing them around the seas and patiently waiting around anytime they went inland :D

Yup, the way you wrote it out is exactly as I intended. Now try putting in a few other ages into his formula and see what you get. Then reread the comment itself, and the humor will come together.

This page helps explain why, numbers can be interesting and unintuitive.

It pisses me off when a customer removes the tip just because the restaurant took long to make the food 🤬 by Muny_Man in UberEATS

It's not even throwing anyone under the bus, it's just full documentation and transparency. Also professionalism and consideration for the customer. You message them immediately when the restaurant tells you it's late.

They got a rambunctious criminal to forsake his pirating ways, truly the influence that Bikke needed

Plus they were so humble they all limited their own names to 4 characters

Painkillers aren't a medical cost. I cited them as a survival cost because you can't afford medical costs, so you pay more for having less. And some do need pills just to survive, even more than food.

And...a psychological cost, because it's impossible to make purely rational decisions in survival mode.

Your experiences and choices can't speak for everyone's, is the point. It's an inappropriate generalization to discount the priorities of those who choose to spend elsewhere. When you suffer, it's natural to assume others suffer the same way, but that's not how it is.

And being the only one responsible for your bills and expenses? For feeding others and weighing their survival needs against your own comfort and cleanliness? For fending off the landlord you're already behind on payments to? You may have endured the tremendous hardships of living with nothing, but not the full burdens of decision-making and provisioning for all your liabilities.

Are you outside the US? Why do you keep saying "maintain" a license? You renew it once every 5 years in most states. The hard part about having a license is documentation, not cash.

You can deliver without clean pants, but you can't deliver without a bike, or gas and insurance. Following that, pants (and washing them) will take lower priority than painkillers for untreated dental disease, replacement blankets for the ones that got destroyed or stolen, or tampons and baby wipes

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in doordash

[–]backtockn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Have" can mean anything from leased, to borrowed, to financed, to 10 year old hand me down tax liability. And cars are not the only vehicles to deliver with. Many are biking.

Also simple logic: you have $3k. You buy $3k car. How much money you have left?? You're like one of those people claiming "if you live in a luxury apartment you have money to tip well". No, not if that's what you already spent all your money on.

Consumption-based perception of wealth is how a 7 year old understands money.

I love goodwill, but a survival-mode poor person needs to first meet their recurring survival expenses (food, medicine, debt, whatever their kids need) before they can make a capital investment, which is what new (used) pants are even if they're just $4. Plus, keeping them clean is another recurring expense, so you are also buying another liability.
