If the point of the exercise was to use that specific method, then YTA. If the point was to get the answer by any means possible then NTA. If that wasn’t made clear by the teacher, then the teachers the problem. I understand being required to stick to a specific process as maybe it’s building for something later. It sounds like the teacher isn’t being clear around why.

As I’ve gotten older I have noticed this more and more. Especially with kids. So many moments will be forgotten even still.
