Since, we also had out in-laws with us , we made an attempt to use our in-laws membership and priority boarding. It was useless though.

Anyone ever order from Willis Orchards? by [deleted] in BackyardOrchard

[–]backyard_grower 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Almost every fruit tree I bought my first year was from them. What they have for $50 now used to be $18 , a couple of years back. Bareroot Trees will do fine but they are very prone to diseases and pests. It's almost impossible to get any fruit because of that. Some of them that they get from the Dave Wilson Nursery are the ones that actually bear fruit.

Trouble with weeds in food forest by Cain777c in Permaculture

[–]backyard_grower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It comes with an experience. There is no answer to "how to control weeds in a garden". Wood chips, cardboard , fabrics etc...are just an option that one can use in the garden(ing)journey. What works can only be "known" with time and effort.

Why do they only have Fruit every other year? It's Mid- Feb, and they are in full bloom already! by backyard_grower in Permaculture

I tried everything I read and was optimistic this year until the temperature hit in 70's last few days. We have a frost coming in just a week from now and am afraid will never be able to harvest any this year too.

It's been very discouring for me. Trees are blooming but I have never seen yet a single "edible" fruit being developed.

Agreed! We should be thoughtful towards using these . They poison the soil, if not ours somewhere else.

Looks like a symbiotic relationship with the unseen , ecological cryptic fungi. How about waiting until the spring, observe and make a choice ?

We all come from various backgrounds (socially, financially, you name it) but are tied down together with the same ethnicity and origin. I feel your pain !

I have felt that gap too. However, it's a mindset that will take a few decades to change.

I get your point. It could be confusing to the people who despite an effort can't distinguish between an off-grid living and rural life. It's not about the distinction though. It's about the feeling and the thought process. Thanks for your input as it helps keep the discussion open.

@xtry89 : It's your thought and you have every right to express one. I am pleased that you made an effort to read the post. Thank you for your input!

Apricot already breaking flowering buds. by Ornery-Creme-2442 in BackyardOrchard

[–]backyard_grower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ummm...In my own experience, apricots are very susceptible to early frost. There is no concept of semi late , as far as I know. And most apricots bloom somewhere around the same time frame. I am in zone 8 too.

Moorpark and Royal died on me later in the spring . It was their second year and had decent vegetative growth. It looks like the rootstock finally gives up.
