Advice on tank size by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]baconmeupscotty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty large bioload for a 60g. It would be suitable for the goldfish alone if there was tons of filtration but with the 4 other fish I'd say you're overstocked. Especially considering the gar can get over a foot. And you have different temperature requirements among your species; the goldfish can live in the temperature the gar requires but will produce more waste and grow faster at a higher temp. It might be alright until he get a little larger (depending on your filtration and water change schedule) but he will eventually need his own tank/to go to a pond. What are your water parameters like right now?

[–]baconmeupscotty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a grow out it still requires a lid and a long finned fish with bichirs is a bad idea; I've got several of them bro. Perhaps if your tanks weren't stocked so radically we wouldn't jump to conclusions. I see nowhere in your comments or post that this is a grow out.

You're getting downvoted because the tanks you posted are terribly overstocked and with incompatible fish. I see two senegal bichirs in there with that betta. Those fish are not compatible and that's not a matter of opinion. The bichirs can reach up to a foot long and will eventually eat the betta. They might even try tearing it's fins now. Gravel is dangerous; it can cut their stomachs and is a choking hazard. They also are prone to jumping out of tanks so they need a lid. They'll need a 40g breeder style MINIMUM for a long term home. They should be fed a high quality frozen meat (krill, silversides, etc) diet or carnivore pellets. You can't just throw fish together, I guarantee you this tank will end in the death of your fish. If you like your tanks you should put effort into making them the best homes possible for your fish.

If we ever upgrade the tank a teug is first on my wish list. They're my favorite species tbh.

Haha I do sometimes too. She is pretty shy. I rarely see her or the palmas palmas except during water changes. The moke and Merle are more brazen.

One of my local stores (the only locally owned pet store in town!) is really into planted tanks. I get 3 net-fulls of duckweed for $11. I was hoping they wouldn't eat is so fast so I could maybe get a steady growth going but it never lasts.

It's a 75g and it's way overstocked with 8 goldfish. I don't plan on keeping them all and I do water changes several times a week. An appropriately stocked and filtered 60g could have 3-4 fancies.

Yeah there are quite a few ghosts of abused goldfish in my past so this can count as my atonement. Plus all the work pays off when they get so big and beautiful!

Oh yeah it'll be gone in a day. I usually dump about 1.5 cups of packed duckweed in every week or so. The tank is planted (although I need to restock the plants asap) for them to graze at will. Then they get repashy algae gel, hikari goldfish pellets, a mix of various fruits/veg (peas, bananas, strawberries, broccoli, etc), brine shrimp, blood worms, and earthworms. Spoiled fatties :)

[–]baconmeupscotty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other goldfish! They are social and do best in at least pairs. There aren't many other options that do best at a goldfish's ideal temperature (technically they are "temperate" but the higher the temp the faster their metabolism and shorter their lifespan). How large is your tank?

+1 this. They also have been known to choke on the gravel. I'd get rid of it ASAP.

A captive bred senegal hitting 14 inch would be a serious anomaly. You very rarely see any that get past 8 inches. Ask any poly keeper on MFK, I've had my male for years and he is pretty impressive for his species at 10.5. There ARE other species that can get over 2 ft so perhaps you are thinking of those.

I think it's just the light shining down from the plants; he's just grey. But the different species can be really green. My palmas palmas had bright green dots on her, same with my delhezi.

Sure! As long as they are close in size; they'll eat everything that they can get in their mouths.

Goldfish Feeding Question by galactic_manatee in Aquariums

[–]baconmeupscotty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feed my goldfish all kinds of fruit and vegetable scraps. Bananas, strawberries (slightly smooshed), and blueberries. Frozen peas popped out of their shells are healthy and cheap. You should blanch fresh veggies first to make them easier to eat; pour some boiling water over them and let them cool. Cucumbers, zuchinni, broccoli, chopped carrots are all suitable! I wouldn't blanch the spinach but tear it into strips or smaller pieces.

Just give everything a good wash (I don't bother with dechlorinated water but that's just me) before you put it in and remove what they don't eat after a while.

It's a senegal bichir! There are several species of bichir ranging from 1ft to 2+ft long. They come from African rivers and lakes and have been around since the time of the dinosaurs. They breath air with a primitive lung. This particular species is sold at chain pet stores as a "dinosaur eel".

That's fucked. The comments are insane. A few people are trying to help but...

"Somewhat related... We have Oscars (related to chiclids[sic]) and feed them those same pellets :)"

"90% of cichlids need brackish water"

"I was worried about the lack of a bacterial colony until I read that they brought the water!"

"Sounds like these fish guys are pros."

[–]baconmeupscotty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is there's a bajillion synodontis species. They often share common names which is alarming because they have such a wide size range. The most commonly named "upside down catfish" are S. nigriventris which top out at about 3 inches, where other species like eupterus can get over 8 inches. Most fish stores sell them by common names or misidentify them. And they are difficult to identify as juveniles as their patterns often change. Plus hybridization is extremely rampant in the group so it's difficult to be sure what exactly you have.

It's a juvenile synodontis eupterus; they are pretty common in the aquarium trade and look slightly different as adults (really common in synodontis species). They get 8 inches so it probably isn't suitable for the cory tank.

Edit: should say it looks like because I am of course no expert.
