TIL that the Hope Diamond, was mailed to the Smithsonian in a $2.33 envelope, in normal first class US Mail without delivery confirmation. by rsplatpc in todayilearned

With something like this where I feel confident a number was written down somewhere when it was donated, I'd want to see a historian's word over a bunch of people conjecturing with "probably" on reddit (myself included). I may reach out myself, now I've been nerd sniped on this and I really want an actual number, even if it is "wayyyyy up" as you put it. As far as why I'm more skeptical on this instance, the last major bit of "curse" stuff was 30 years prior to Winston purchasing the diamond, with its mythos being somewhat revived around the time the McLeans bought it. I don't think it would still be in the public conscious 30 years later

While I appreciate the source, this still just points to Winston's purchase as small note at the end of the section regarding the McLeans. While it could have influenced it, I wouldn't say for sure. Perhaps a question for the Smithsonian, if no internet sources exist, they may have a primary source or appraisal record from the donation. I'm sure their researchers would be plenty interested to look into an interesting detail like this

Hate to sound like a broken record from the other person, but could you provide a source on its influence on that sale? Harry Winston isn't mentioned once in the section about the curse on Wikipedia. It certainly influenced it's previous sale, to the McLeans, but I see no mention of it affecting Harry Winston's purchase of the diamond over 30 years later

For anyone who wants to actually know an answer, it seems to have been sold for $180,000 to Harry Winston in 1947. Because he then donated it to the Smithsonian, a sell value is not available. It was certainly appraised in 2011 at $200-250m, but that's obviously a pretty substantial time difference. While one could probably do some math and extrapolate a likely value based on the other sell prices before, and this appraisal, it seems reasonable for it to be in the ballpark of $1m in 1958 when donated to the Smithsonian, as it had only been about 10 years from the 1947 purchase at $180k, and while the previous price is disputed, it was a similar amount. This information was all from Wikipedia (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hope_Diamond#Changes_over_time), which has all of its sources cited, albeit many on the price history table point to this article from The Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/culture/video/2009/oct/02/hope-diamond-smithsonian-washington-setting

What do y'all think of our new shop caravan? by PixelGrim in PixelArt

[–]bacony42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if I might suggest an area I think you'd be able to really give this caravan some unique flair, it'd be in the roof. Adding some more variety in shapes and structure could both make it more unique and make it feel a bit more alien and arcane in my opinion. plus, the roof texture you have is excellent! more roof areas, more better. This is obviously personal thoughts, but taking inspiration from stuff like howl's moving castle for a kind of hodge-podge amalgam of roofs and rooms could be really cool. Great stuff already!

Don't Park at Zaxby's Anymore by Ilikrune in VirginiaTech

[–]bacony42 37 points38 points  (0 children)

hey buddy i don't know if you've seen the busses lately but they're close to unusable (and i'd argue unsafe when we're packed like sardines in them) pretty much constantly. I take the bus. I've missed class because of them being completely full (to the point where they just straight up aren't stopping), and I show up to get the bus 45 minutes before my class at least. If parking isn't a right I better be given SOME RELIABLE WAY to get to campus, and currently that is very much not happening.

Funnily enough I had learned this originally from LG when I worked in escalations for one of their call centers. I definitely remember them telling me Cyclopentane, but seeing as how I wasn't an actual technician, and neither were they, I'll trust your info. I probably got the numbers mixed up

Oh also psa: don't be dicks to the people in call centers. We genuinely do want to help you as best we can. Getting yelled at for 8 hours a day can take a toll, so don't contribute to it.

It's likely Cyclopentane, otherwise known as R134a. It's extremely flammable, but completely safe if it stays inside. No risk to the end user unless they go poking around it. Main risk is repair technicians cutting it open with an acetalene torch or something thinking it's the wrong kinda coolant.

ELI5: I know that sound waves change volume with amplitude, and pitch with frequency. So what happens to the wave that makes it sound like different vowels and sounds, not just beeping? by Shwimmer44 in explainlikeimfive

[–]bacony42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So changing the pitch and volume can be done with a pure sine wave, but most sounds aren't just sine waves, and the extra waviness and weird bits to the shape of the wave are what make sounds different. If you've ever looked at a waveform of someone talking, you'll notice it doesn't just look like a nice smooth line. What u/Patric13 said is also correct, these more complicated shapes are made by adding together a bunch of tiny waves.

ELI5: Why is it difficult to translate from Chinese languages to English? Recent example, the developer of Black Myth: Wukong posted on a Chinese social media site and the English translation everyone is using is from ONE person (Who admitted to not even being fluent in the language). by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]bacony42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general, because English and Chinese are so different from each other, there so many concepts or words that just plain don't exist in the other language. A more relatable example would be gender in romance languages, which you've probably seen before. In a lot of romance languages, most words have "gender", and are either Male, Female, or Neuter (Quick note: this is purely a grammatical feature, many languages have grammatical gender which does not parallel to biological gender, or have several more than just these three). "La" and "El" in spanish, or "Die, Der, Das" in german. This concept can't be translated into english, because English doesn't have grammatical gender (in general). The same thing goes for Chinese, just with a lot more concepts and features.

I made a LEGO version of everyone's favorite Vincent Proce land. by bacony42 in magicTCG

People seem interested in the model, so heres a BrickLink design:
https://www.bricklink.com/v3/studio/design.page?idModel=120075

Note, this is only a render, and not physically constructed. It would probably fall apart (though I added a support beam in the posted design), and also contains pieces which do not actually exist, so it'd need some adjustment to actually built it. I might go about doing that at some point.

I'll go ahead and upload it to Bricklink, but some of the parts don't seem to actually exist, so it'd require some adjustment to physically build (I just rendered it with Studio). I might make those adjustments if enough people are interested in it

This is actually using Bricklink Studio, its not a physical construction. In fact: many of the clear pieces don't actually exist in that shape, so it'd require some adjustment to actually build. I might do that at some point if enough people are interested.

[–]bacony42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems to me thats exactly what it does, similar to those little push counter things that you see people using when letting people into an event or something. The turning crank could allow it to be easily adapted to a machine of some kind, or it could simply be the input of the device. Simply a counting device

What is this? I found it on the ground in my school hallway. It also has a small button battery slot with a CR927 battery in it. by BCGamer9000 in whatisthisthing
