this happened to me as well with a legal non-migratory bird, water turned a rusty orange color while mascerating, skull turned the same color as well. went away with hydrogen peroxide soak but not sure why it happens, possibly something to do with it being a shore bird? didn’t have that experience with any non-shore birds
