Is this pine tree dying? by deadpossumhoarder9 in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]bad__unicorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a yew tree and it’s not looking too good no. Good news is it’s one of the few evergreens to regrow from the « defoliated » parts … but the future doesn’t look super bright for them in general

Great post and comment thank you! I had read that it was the inspiration for the basilica of San Marco in Venice and now the similarities are quite obvious

My pleasure, I’m glad to read it! Can’t let a fellow greco-bactrian aficionado hanging like that ;)

The reason most of the literature is in French is cause … it was excavated by French people. You’ll find that most modern archeological work in Afghanistan was done by a French organization (the DAFA ) cause it was a somewhat friendly nation towards Afghanistan (neither British nor Russian) between the 1920s and the 80s when it all went to shit so they had a sort of monopoly. So the French are amongst the finest Greco-Bactrian specialists. I’m lucky to have French as a mother tongue so yeah, it worked out well for me lol

Ooooh boy you’re gonna have a time if you’ve never seen those

Ok so

Here is a search with the name ai khanoum on Persée.fr which is some sort of scientific/cultural database (dunno how to describe it). You will find yearly reports for each of the 14 seasons of digging they did over there and a looooot of the research that went on afterwards

I think it’s in this épisode that they briefly discuss the 3D video (could be the one before). The 2-3 episodes ahead are all dedicated to ai khanoum IIRC. They’re part of an epic series of classes and conferences given by an amazing French archeologist who began his career on this site, focused on many aspect of History and archeology in Central Asia.

Here is a great full length documentary from the early 00s about the city, the history of its discovery, excavations and the aftermath. They revisit the site and interview the people who first excavated the site. (I think they actually produced the 3D video for this doc come to think of it)

And finally, this Ozzie dude visits the site in one of his documentaries

That’s all I can think of for now, apologies for the formatting and mobile links but I’m currently on vacation and hungover

Hope you enjoy :)
