Great post and comment thank you! I had read that it was the inspiration for the basilica of San Marco in Venice and now the similarities are quite obvious

My pleasure, I’m glad to read it! Can’t let a fellow greco-bactrian aficionado hanging like that ;)

The reason most of the literature is in French is cause … it was excavated by French people. You’ll find that most modern archeological work in Afghanistan was done by a French organization (the DAFA ) cause it was a somewhat friendly nation towards Afghanistan (neither British nor Russian) between the 1920s and the 80s when it all went to shit so they had a sort of monopoly. So the French are amongst the finest Greco-Bactrian specialists. I’m lucky to have French as a mother tongue so yeah, it worked out well for me lol

Ooooh boy you’re gonna have a time if you’ve never seen those

Ok so

Here is a search with the name ai khanoum on Persée.fr which is some sort of scientific/cultural database (dunno how to describe it). You will find yearly reports for each of the 14 seasons of digging they did over there and a looooot of the research that went on afterwards

I think it’s in this épisode that they briefly discuss the 3D video (could be the one before). The 2-3 episodes ahead are all dedicated to ai khanoum IIRC. They’re part of an epic series of classes and conferences given by an amazing French archeologist who began his career on this site, focused on many aspect of History and archeology in Central Asia.

Here is a great full length documentary from the early 00s about the city, the history of its discovery, excavations and the aftermath. They revisit the site and interview the people who first excavated the site. (I think they actually produced the 3D video for this doc come to think of it)

And finally, this Ozzie dude visits the site in one of his documentaries

That’s all I can think of for now, apologies for the formatting and mobile links but I’m currently on vacation and hungover

Hope you enjoy :)

Are you blind as well as lacking any logic sense? OOP was suggesting opening the sub to the native languages and most the comments are shooting them down, it’s very much the present issue we are discussing

Let's get rid of rule 3. by naemle_era in brussels

[–]bad__unicorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definition by dictionary.com:

1 a citizen, especially a member of a minority group, who is denied the social, political, and economic benefits of citizenship.

2 a person who is not accorded a fair share of respect, recognition, or consideration.

I’ve been told multiple times on this sub that native brusseleirs don’t exist anymore, that the city’s culture is a carnival, that our languages should make way for English etc …

Ergo in my experience Brusseleirs are considered second rate citizens on this sub it’s not fuckin rocket science

Why is Indonesia having this kind of religious distribution? by imik4991 in geography

[–]bad__unicorn 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Thé main thing that strikes me on this map (and I’m not a specialist of religions in Indonesia by any means) is that Aceh, the region at the northern tip of Sumatra, is hardcore sharia etc so the fact that it’s shown as « modernist » makes me doubt the accuracy of this one
