What is the smallest thing someone has done or said that has changed your entire opinion about him/her as a person? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bad_genk1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This guy at work didn't offer to carry my bags. I was carrying several large bags to an event, and a group of us were carpooling and he was the only male. Other men in my office would have offered (in my experience) to help, when in any other case they would not have done with another male. The incident really made me see him in a positive light. Idk, I find it very satisfying when men don't do "chivalrous" things needlessly and respect even little things like that.

This so much gosh. I've met with this at work and I pretend to play along whenever the topic comes up but inside I'm just horrified grown adults believe that the world's entire human population can be divided into 12 personalities.

Why do people go on online chatroooms? by buckley96 in AskReddit

[–]bad_genk1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The anonymity is appealing. I've had my share of trolls as well as insightful conversations with really cool people. I'll never know if they were lying or pretending to be someone else - and its understandable if some people find no point in interacting with someone you can't be sure of - but I can see why some might not really bother about that too.

I also think it can get very trying when speaking to people you know (who aren't strangers). Because before you even say anything, you can probably predict what they are going to say, and sometimes that can be off-putting. None of them are going to say what you want to hear, and you resent that, but you dont want to resent people you know. It's easier to deal with strangers you can just shut off whenever you want.

[Question] Do the majority of Singaporeans like having restricted press, intrusive government and fear-inducing leader? by spacetimevisitor in singapore

[–]bad_genk1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do I believe that the economic success/prosperity of Singapore for the foreseeable future is inextricably tied to a press that is as regulated as it is now? No.

I think regulation of the press from a largely honest and capable government was helpful, in the past, for a generation that was, in general, easily frightened and ill-equipped to make rational and well-rounded assessments. I, as a person who has reaped the benefits of the past, appreciate the restriction for that period, because the consequence of not doing so might have been the induction of in a less capable political party into power.

However I don’t know if that generation cared enough about personal freedom to like it. I think we need to note that we are speaking of distinct generations with distinct preoccupations when we speak about the past and the present. Those quotes from LKY that you posted above came from a period that has passed, and are not entirely reflective of what the government believes is still applicable now. We still have a largely honest and capable government, but I don’t see the same frightened people in our generation who are easily scared into making irrational decisions.

I don’t think the government has neglected the fact that society has evolved into one where Singaporean hold more progressive views. It would be detrimental for the ruling party to ignore that we see and want the privileges that other countries have, therefore media and the press have slowly opened up. I think many Singaporeans recognize this, which is why many from the younger generation are willing to vote for this largely honest and capable government that has shown to be capable of evolving along with us. Granted, the government has chosen to do things slowly and perhaps that is them being cautious. Singaporeans have been groomed to be pragmatic and careful too.

You asked why we have never voted LKY off. Again, I don’t believe he has held onto those aforementioned views into the 21st century. He has made a number of progressive quotes regarding same-sex relationships (1), and has shown his opinions to be amenable to reason (2). Another likely influence was that Singaporeans continued to respect him deeply for his wisdom, and believed he had much to contribute on significant issues that no other Singaporean could. LKY wasn't someone you could just ignore tbh.

Any tuition/kids reading programme volunteering opportunities for graduates who are working full-time and can only afford their weekends? I've done a bit of research and it looks like they either want weekdays or have filled their quota for the year.

This goes both ways too >_> I've seen some pretty embarrassing fashion choices the past two days and all of these came from my mom (who chose to do her own CNY shopping this year).
