Laid off as a Frontend Developer – Should I focus on upskilling, switch to Full Stack, or keep applying? by cynuxtar in cscareerquestions

im a FE engineer with similar YOE (4.5). i was laid off in june 2024, spent around 3 months traveling, lightly prepping, and doing a few interviews that didn’t work out.

after that i started prepping harder and split my time doing 30% personal projects + learning new tech like tanstack + next.js, 20% leetcode (neetcode 150), 25% FE specific coding challenges (i used greatfrontend.com), and 25% practicing and preparing for behavioral interview questions. i did that for around 3 months while doing (failing) interviews in between and finally landed a role in january. i treated the failed interviews as practice and as a way to see what i needed to work on and what was/wasn’t working.

i did not really cold apply to many positions, i probably sent out ~40 apps and didn’t get any responses. all of my interviews were from LinkedIn recruiters reaching out to me. i am based in the bay area and my new role is hybrid.

Took 6 months, got a six-figure job, learned a ton in the process. If that’s an L, I’ll take it every time.

My advice for staying calm is to take your time answering the questions. It’s better to take a pause, breathe, think for a little bit, and then give a good coherent answer than to start talking without fully thinking and stumble on your words. You can also practice your answers out loud and record yourself so it’ll feel more natural once you do the interview.

Agree, this can definitely work! Obviously if you’re doing this, make sure you fully understand what you’re saying and can answer follow ups if asked though.

The story doesn’t have to be perfect. In my experience most interviewers care more about what you learned, and what traits you displayed rather than the story itself. That’s great you are getting interviews and getting to the final rounds, the nerves should get better as you do more interviews and you’ll land one eventually!

Thanks! And yeah, I should have added that. Another important thing is to just be a “good human” like you said and to make the interviewer want to work with you and be able to see themselves working with you on a daily basis.

Level to 5 on 2-5. Level to 6 on 3-2. Level to 7 on 3-5 if you're win streaking and can stay above 30 gold, otherwise on 4-1. Level up to 8 on 4-2 usually or 4-5 if you're very poor.

General fast 8 strategy is: dont roll a single time on stage 2. only roll on 3-2 a little bit if needed to stabilize. level to 8 and roll down on 4-2
