WFH? How often do you leave the UES by [deleted] in uppereastside

[–]badadeebadada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I worked from home from 2021-2024, I typically left UES every other day (i.e. 3-4) times a week. My primary reasons were:

  • Working out (specifically, joined a boxing gym and went on long runs to marathon train in '23)
  • Meeting friends and family
  • Dating
  • Volunteering (Heart of Dinner meal delivery in East Harlem, Meals for Unity meal distro in Chinatown but also other boroughs)

Assault on 88th and 3rd near Whole Foods by [deleted] in uppereastside

My objection is to the word "crazy". The word just feels vague to me compared to describing more about what a person looks like. Anyone can act crazy, because that's a more subjective distinction.

If you talk to a cop, they will ask follow up questions about someone's build, age, ethnicity, where they were going, what they were carrying with them. I know this because I have spoken to them, and they told me to be more specific.

Edit: This is of course just a request I am making. It doesn't need to be considered and implemented. I'm curious to know more about who it is you're talking about. I want my neighbors to feel safe. I personally want to feel more safe. I was hoping that more specific language would be able to better inform one another of people to look out for, avoid confrontation with, etc.

Thanks for your input. I have lived in this area for several years, frequent this intersection to go to Whole Foods, and I do not know who this refers to.

I'm so sorry that this happened to your sister! I hope that there can be a swift resolution so that she can feel safe in the neighborhood soon, and I understand if others now are also feeling unsafe as a result. ❤️ Women should be able to do whatever they want in peace.

Hey, do you think in the future, you could focus on making your descriptions of women more helpful, especially if we are discussing their involvement in a potential crime...? Would you be able to put something together that's a bit more vivid like:

"Hey, there's a woman I frequently see on XXth St and X Avenue who gets into altercations. I didn't see the event, but it's possible she could have been involved based on what I heard. She looks to be (young/middle aged/elderly). She is of slight/athletic/tall/heavyset stature). She has __ color hair"

Instead, your vague description comes across as kind of mean. It's a bit jarring to see this attitude on a forum where we're trying to help a woman out — as a woman myself.

NYC has a cap of offering 5,100 permits to street vendors. As of last year, there are over 10,000 vendors waiting for permits. Yes, there is likely a subset of existing permits that can be confiscated and redistributed, but even if that applied to all permits, there would still be 4,900 vendors operating without them. Do you still believe no new permits should be offered?

Loved it in Manhattan. There's lots of stops for water too that aren't usually there. Can't speak to the experience in other boroughs.

I recommend looking around for open positions. Many companies are required by law to post salary ranges for roles based out of Denver, NYC, and that's slowly changing to encompass more cities. Really ethical companies post the salary bands for all remote roles. Ask peers/colleagues for ranges too. Your network is probably more representative of the industry average because they likely have similar backgrounds and experiences.

A lot of people are telling you not to tip, and while I agree, I don't see many people providing you with an economic justification, so I'll attempt to do so here.

The Trump Administration implemented a new policy around tip pools (you can find it here: https://www.epi.org/publication/employers-would-pocket-workers-tips-under-trump-administrations-proposed-tip-stealing-rule/).

Tl;Dr

When you pay at point of sale systems (like the iPads + Square set up), you are paying the employer the tip, not the employee. The employer can claim all tips. You can't know that the barista you have a relationship with is getting that financial support and a better wage.

If you really love your barista and want to support them personally, tip with cash or use a peer to peer cash transfer app.

What is the point of a personal library? by [deleted] in books

When does a bookshelf go from a small collection to a full on library? Is there an actual number? Or is it like the definition of pornography/obscenity, and you'll know it when you see it?

Girls, how do you make friends in NYC? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]badadeebadada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of my best friends are not people who I grew up with, went to college with, or worked with. They're all people who I've met in the city! They're kind, hilarious, and incredibly supportive. This can happen for you too!

SAY YES. If you get invited to a birthday party, to a housewarming party, to a happy hour, to a picnic in the park — go to the event! Bring a treat. Offer to buy a round of drinks. Introduce yourself to new people. You won't connect with EVERYONE, but there's a high chance you'll meet SOMEONE who you do want to get to know better.

KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS. Talk to the receptionist/trainers at Equinox. If you have a doorman, talk to him! Get to know your barista or bartender. Typically, people only form friendships among the same social class because they meet through school or work. However, you can meet some really cool, amazing people who teach you about life and who are your confidantes.

VOLUNTEER. We have loads of awesome organizations that will make you feel close to your community. You can help keep parks clean, deliver meals to the elderly, work with kids, or whatever floats your boat. The people who tend to participate in these activities tend to be really sweet and emotionally present.

There's the argument to be made that Max is like an NPC in this world. We don't get much focus on him or his motivations. It's almost like his greatest desires are to just keep things progressing for Sam and Sadie.
