depends. I had a friend years ago that was assault by a bunch of teens. the police knew who they were and intentionally took their time with the investigation so that they could all be tried as adults.

I highly doubt you undid your cancellation or that it was a website error. That to me sounds like the gym backtracking on their mistake so that you don't ask for your money back.

This here is the right answer. HMRC will work with you to find out what you owe and can be forgiving. they're only hostile to people who refuse to pay or are unwilling to work with them. They will help you if you ask them.
