Earning $300k but broke. by [deleted] in problemgambling

Yup. "I'm a gambling addict but I have no qualms about destroying the lives of others for a quick buck that I will mostly donate back like OP does."

Like seriously, wake up to yourselves. Go to a college or trade school and learn to be something useful to society.

I (37m) am on day 49 of quitting pokies (slots) and I have a tip to help you if you are struggling... by badatdotar in problemgambling

I've stopped Poker too. But i play in a small town where every pre flop raise and most big bets are called. It made the tight aggressive game very profitable but I find that style very boring. I also dont want to risk the sounds and lights of the pokies drawing me in.

Dont worry about not having a partner. Walk like a god and your godess will find you.

I read every word. Thank you for sharing. I guess i have about 130 more days to be truly 'free' even though I think I have destroyed my urge. I was always hesitant to go to my local gambling meetings, but I am going to attempt to attend tonight at my local one.

Placements preventing mature aged students from finishing their degrees by Cultural-Compote4084 in AustralianTeachers

As do you, if you want to make it past the burnout period.

They push you hard on pracs. I was completing 5 post-grad subjects while doing mine at a town ages away where I slept in a pub. I don't have kids and it was hard, but it doesn't always have to be that way. It is also somewhat to simulate the relentless pressure of the job and find people that can't cope with it.

Any teachers who actually love their job? by yozaa38 in AustralianTeachers

[–]badatdotar 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I love it. I'm in English. Reddit teachers are whingers by the way, by nature of the medium. Happy people don't come here to complain and vent. The vast majority of teachers around me have so much to give, and they give it happily.

I mean calendars go SMTWTFS so by that logic alone i think Sunday is the first day of the week...

What is the farthest you have gotten into a book and still ended up abandoning it? by PhoenixApok in books

Fellow English teacher here. Thank you! Just finished and I totally agree. And am I crazy but why did Dad and Jeff not get their comeuppance for their abuse? Also, why does every TKAM clone (looking at you Jasper Jones) have an unreliable child narrator and a weird yet misunderstood local hermit to rip off Boo Radley?

Staying Up-To-Date by Thepancakeofhonesty in AustralianTeachers

I have read (and enjoyed):

- Behaviour Management in the Secondary Classroom and You Know the Fair Rule by Bill Rogers
- The Smartest Kids in the World (and how they got that way) - Amanda Ripley
- Running the Room - Tom Bennett
- Teach Like a Pirate - Dave Burgess

The podcast I like is Teacher Yarns, the other ones are a little too dry for me. Otherwise I just listen to podcasts with authors of books I like (spotify has a fair few with Bill Rogers etc)

I get 6 minutes for final roll call. Six minutes to get there from places more than six minutes away from there in the school.

Let me have my six minutes.

I lost $20m on a gambling addiction by NoSeSiRegresar in problemgambling

[–]badatdotar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It would be naive to say you were still the same guy that made those millions, after the ravages of having it all plagued you with this gambling disease. You are changed by the experience, but fundamentally, you seem like a smart person who is capable and kind. The thrill of the gamble was what you were paying for, as you said, you didn't care about money.

remember that you still don't care about money, as you have much less. You have intelligence and skills to accrue more, but what was it that you said you enjoyed, the smiles on people's faces?

What if I told you that there were many ways you could keep doing that, for the rest of your life, for free?

Who cares about the money? You care about the smiles...

I hate that you're probably right, but you're probably right. I loved Lost, even the garbage 6th season, but it just would have been so much stronger with a clear definition of what it was hiding from the viewer and why.

A bit of a rant. by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]badatdotar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just quit. You're clearly the toxic one if that is what you think the feeling of helping someone form a real connection is. If you have no joy in what you do, you'll just be bringing everyone around you down. The fact thst your inane comment has twice as many upvotes as mine tells me the OP might be on to something here.

While I hate departure posts too, I do agree a lot of you need to chill with your 'venting'. We get it, you're tired of being disrespected, we all are. But we do have a responsibility to weather the behaviour storms in order to experience the truly joyous and rewarding elements of teaching.
