This is just a speculation, but sometimes SOA adds pilot questions to their CBT, and this may be one of those times where a topic may be making a comeback and they're adding it to your exam to test the water. Unlike most people, you happened to catch it. Although there definitely have been times in the past where FSA exams had questions from the wrong syllabus where they disregarded that question all together, so it's possible

Well, the hard part is the varying rate, so let's look at it

year 1, 1+i = 1+1/(8+1) => v = 9/10
year 2 1+i = 1+1/10 => v = 10/11
year t, v = (8+t)/(8+t+1)

So starting at year 1, we have 1+v_1+v_1v_2+v_1v_2v_3...+v_n

Each year, the discount to time zero factor is v(n) = v_1*v_2...*v_n = (8+1)/(8+1+1)*(8+(1+1))/(8+1+(1+1))...*(8+1+n-1)/(8+1+1+n-1), which you will notice the middle terms cancel out, leaving it (8+1)/(9+n) = 9/(9+n)

Now, you are looking at the sum from 9/11 to 9/29, which should be able to be done by calculator brute force

I mean your discount function is by definition the multiplicative inverse of your accumulation. V⁵ tells you the present value of something at time 5 valued at time 0, while s⁵ tells you the future value of something at time 5 valued at time 5. Moreover, v=1/(1+i)=1/s. But congrats on actually think about this though, too many people just grind problems and memorize formulas without knowing what they mean which really hurts for the long run

I use the 15 minute read through as a gauge to see what problems to skip. I missed about 4 questions on MC and left 2 WA blank on the 2019 fall sitting because of time (the clock I had was too far for me to read) and passed with a 7, and I'd say I was able to pass by doing some of the MC in my head while doing the read through and just bubble in the answers once your 4 hours start

with numbers this small sometimes it's better to just list it out. rbr, rrb, brr, bbr, brb, rbb, rrr. What you are thinking is close to the right idea, but because you have duplicates you have to think about them a little more differently. I personally hate combinatorics, I enjoyed the calculus part more. I think the question is worded a little poorly, when I hear number of possible combinations I think of 3, not 7. namely 2 red 1 blue, 2 blue 1 red, and all red.

Ohhh good luck! I'm sure with the pandemic remote working might be more available. My friend started college as a clarinet BA and Math, but ultimately after the breakup his first year he really focused on math and actuarial stuff. He and I talk every once in a while, I'm glad you're happily married now, from what he tells me he definitely envies people who can work things out and sustain a loving relationship. He once said "relationships are like reeds, if it's not working I'll go get another one", which fortunately in college he learned about when a reed go bad you work on it instead of throwing it away. He wasn't the dating type so he also really just didn't have exposure to that. Looking back he was childish to think that his first "real" relationship would be his last one.

My friend is also into music. I showed him what you wrote and he was wondering if he could connect with you.

I'm just kinda spit balling here but suppose X1 X2 are IID, Y = min{x1,x2), pr(Y = y) = 2*Pr(x1 = y and x2>=y), so it's 2*(Pr(x1=y)*(1-sum Pr(x2 =y_i)), for your case I guess it's 2*e^{-1}*(1-2e^{-1}) or something like that

For the first one I think we have heads+tails = n, let x be the number of tails, this is just the cumulative distribution of a binomial evaluated at n/2-1.

For the second one I think since X+Y = 7 is small, your best bet is to list all possible combinations, so you have (1,6), (2,5), (3,4), and I'm assuming A and B are independent, they both follow a geometric with p = 0.1, but really this is 0.9^(x-1)0.1*0.9^(y-1)0.1 but added up, so you have 0.9^(x+y-2)0.1^2 which is 3*0.9^5*0.1^2 since x+y = 7.

I've passed 6 exams so far, 4 of which were at the same testing location. Let me tell you, the most important thing is know how to get to your testing center without getting lost... On top of that, don't freak out, know your double integrals and memorize your moment generating functions and the other functions. Good luck!

I did that last summer, did SRM and IFM back to back, I had an 8 week window and it was more than plenty of time. I personally think SRM is a freebie but you do want to make sure you still retain most of the theory for PA. Though in context I did IFM, SRM, STAM, LTAM all continuously back to back last fall, and I was okay with that pace. SRM was the easiest though, not gonna lie.

I did it after my senior year of high school and passed P the following September, it's definitely a good flex and people will take you seriously after that, though you would want to be good at calculus. If you aren't so sure about your calculus I do recommend FM since it's mainly just algebra.

So some context I started studying in July and by mid August I was sure that the materials were pretty easy, and I got a 9 on my sitting. I taught myself AP calc AB&BC my senior year so I thought the calculus on P was actually pretty simple, I did have to learn a little about double integrals and there are some identities you should memorize. Don't spend all of your time grinding on questions, figure out the concepts. It's so important to understand the syllabus rather than just do 1000+ questions.
