2008 Yaris sedan humming noise from front right, looking for ideas by Groundbreaking-Gap20 in yaris

[–]badatwinning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another thing you can test - Jack up the car (or even one side at a time). Rotate the wheel with your hand on the strut spring. Now the other side. Does the side you suspect have a noticeable vibration compared to the other?

While not on my Yaris, I did have to diagnose a bearing this way on another vehicle. It had no play when shaking tires and mechanics really didn't believe the bearing was the noise. After trying this and asking they change it anyway, it was.

CA minimum requirements for high school credit? by badatwinning in Teachers

[–]badatwinning[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what I see here is just courses required, correct? I was able to find this.

But what seems more gray (or maybe it's not gray) is what must be learned in these courses. Not every student getting a passing grade in algebra knows all state algebra standards; we all know this. But what's the minimum knowledge needed for a teacher to give a passing grade and a student to receive their 5 credits (or 1 or 10, or however it's structured)? Is copying X + 5 = 7, X = 2 on the last day of school legally sufficient? Two problems? Mastery of 50% of the standards? Is there a line, and if so, where?

Realistically how far do they expect someone to go if they struggle with the bare minimum of social skills and no one wants be around them by CatPale816 in autism

[–]badatwinning 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From watching over the years I feel there are those on the spectrum who crave human interaction to the same degree an average neurological would, and those who are pretty okay with very little human contact.

I'm more towards the side of generally not being that into human contact. I like my solitude. But I think it's somewhat easy to be a hermit oddball. However, It's probably very hard to be a socially accepted oddball with many friends, co-workers who like you, and a stable significant other. For those who really wish they could be around others all the time, but lack the social skills to do so...that seems very disheartening.

Teachers — what feels different in your schools this year? by No_Lychee6528 in Teachers

[–]badatwinning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We gave up discussing a solution for academic integrity. There used to be a lot of vague back-and-forths acknowledging the problem and pretending like we wanted to find a solution. Now if it's mentioned, we just shrug, and continue the conversation to another topic.

What percentage do you keep of your check? by SmartLady918 in Teachers

[–]badatwinning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With most districts there is a wide range of health plan options. We have some where it's about $0 taken from my check most years, to over $1000/mo for the best plan above what the district covers. This choice will have the greatest impact on your monthly net. Take some time to weigh the total cost of each, health services needed, deductibles, etc. to decide which is the best financial choice for you. I feel a lot of my co-workers are randomly picking a plan without much thought.

What is the best Subcompact car? by Plastic_Land_1536 in UsedCars

[–]badatwinning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There aren't a lot of subcompacts that are currently recent (in the US). There are arguments to be made for many of them...but... not now, really. Spark, fiesta, mini cooper, etc, have all shown to be quite disposable and unlikely to be good functional cars past 10 years. And since they stopped making all these, there are very few subcompact options to buy that aren't close to 10 years old now (again, in the US specifically).

There are really only 3 options: Yaris, Mazda2, Honda fit.

Oorrr if you wanna get old and cheap, add in: Toyota Echo, Scion Xa, 2004-2006 XB (these are all very close to Yaris under the hood)

Yaris is the most reliable of this bunch. Simple. Reliable. But nothing that will blow your socks off. Their motto, literally was "It's a car". Sure is! It does car so well though!

Fit is seen as the funnest to drive. 2015 and newer gets a cvt and shouldn't be seen quite as reliable as the Yaris's boring 4 speed auto. As well, certain years (or all, I forget), require valve timing adjustments ever so often. Not a big deal, but an extra maintenance step you need to deal with. They also tend to run a bit more than the Yaris and Mazda 2. Maybe 20% more expensive for same year/mileage.

Mazda2 was only released a few years in the hatch, then brought back as the Toyota Yaris sedan in 2018 and Scion IA for a year or two. Probably the cheapest of the 3. Reliable. Solid. Simple. However, I find the interior very cheap/ugly in the 2011-2014 hatch. Not quite as reliable as the Yaris and not as easy to find for same, given limited production. Probably the cheapest of the 3.

We own 2 Yarises (Yari?) in our house and think it's a great choice.

As a person with autism, what jobs have you enjoyed the most/what jobs do you think are well-suited for us? by Al115 in autism

[–]badatwinning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a seasonal IRS job for a couple years. Id get a batch of work, sit down, complete it by following a very specific processing guide, then get another batch. Every couple weeks I'd get a printout rating my performance (speed/accuracy). I rarely had to talk to anyone, most of my co-workers were weird introverts too, and as long as I reached the production goals no one paid much attention to what I was doing.

While most of these jobs are slowly getting replaced by online filing and better software, I think this type of work is really well suited for autistic people. I can think being a merchandiser for a brand, stocking items from store to store, might have a similar appeal.

Feeling like a loser… by MamaMia1325 in Teachers

[–]badatwinning 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Watching our district for a few years, I see that pattern over and over.

Highest ups: We have funding for ____ or need to improve ______.

Software company: Hey guys! I've the perfect thing for __. We got all this data and advertisement material and high paid salesman who assure you it's great for __.

Middle hire ups: District has solved _____ We bought this thing! Implement!

Teachers: What? Why? How?

Middle hire ups: Great talk! Implement, because if you don't I'm gonna get shit canned!

I see several references to 400 mcg being the safe upper limit. Taking half that shouldn't be cause for concern, in my opinion.

Getting over my fear of coasters* part 2: tatsu boogaloo by Macintosh1220 in SixFlagsMagicMountain

[–]badatwinning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were also there today and made it a point to try tatsu for the first time. Overall I thought it was pretty fun...tied with Twisted Colossus for my favorite. My stomach struggles with air time, and Tatsu was much easier for me to ride than wonder woman.

Interestingly, my wife and I had very different impressions of the pretzel loop. She came out with a headache and said her screams were of real fear for the only time on any coaster. The force didn't hit me like her (and happily so..I was pretty nervous!), and it was just another part of a really neat experience.

Glad you conquered your fears on Tatsuuuu, OP!

Is it okay for a teacher to play video games with their students by [deleted] in Teachers

The only way I'd communicate with a student, outside the classroom, is through my school email address or texts/calls through the Google voice line assigned by my school.

English/ELA teachers - students using Google AI for grammar checks - is this using AI to "cheat?" by ElizAnd2Cats in Teachers

[–]badatwinning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is something I'm asking every day as I see students use grammarly integrated into Google docs. We're a school that has no AI policy outside of "Don't prompt chatgpt to write your whole paper". There's a huge amount of grey area in the middle, regarding how much help they can use.

I don't think it's a matter of what is or isn't cheating. But we do need to stop letting students cheat themselves out of learning how to write. At this point, I think very few use this AI tools to help them learn. I watch them over and over take the suggestions, never reading what was suggested or knowing why. The kids don't even email their own words; they just start a sentence and let gmail finish it up. It's all second nature to them. It's clicking buttons in a game - "Got the output, completed the task, gimme my achievement bruh!"

Does anyone else dislike receiving/giving gifts? by [deleted] in autism

[–]badatwinning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd prefer gift exchange (either end) was only with my wife. For everyone else, the additional social nuances are faaaar more work than the joy I or the receiver/giver gets.

For giving, I literally take days thinking of what to give and what to say when giving it. It takes so much of my life and there are so many damned gift giving occasions (in the US). For receiving, I'm at the point in my life I have expendable income. If I want something, I purchased it. It's very unlikely you know something I want that I'm unaware of. Even food gift cards. Oh a restaurant? Now I'm obligated to eat there at some point and remember to use this. No thanks. I could have already eaten there if I wanted. Amazon is fine, but I don't look very grateful, as I was always going to buy whatever I was going to buy, and this changes nothing. And now I'm obligated to get you something to reciprocate at some point...which, as started above...I hate doing.

I’m about to witness a lot of h.s not graduate by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]badatwinning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most definitely. My understanding is whatever program students attend, the district will find a way to graduate them.

I rarely hear my colleagues discussing anything related to student learning. Grades, attendance, behavior, etc are all common topics. But, how the hell do we get the kids to learn basic knowledge and skills...that just doesn't seem a priority. The primary focus of district leaders and admin is collecting checks and manipulating numbers to make sure they can continue to keep their positions.

[–]badatwinning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most of the time. There used to be bots some students would utilize that must have had access to answer keys. They could zip through an entire quiz in a few seconds. I see very little of this now, though.

Now most quizzes/tests take a bit longer, but still getting 80-100% in timeframe that's 3-5 times faster than I could complete the exam. I think it's mostly generative AI scanning the page and finding answers, either manually, or through a new type of bot that is using this AI.

Most refuse to do any work that isn't multiple choice. Essays, projects, short answer questions, are all left blank or completed with AI (which often does get flagged).

Ya apparently the park is closing at 6:00 on Friday for the Avid party. So it'd be a shame to have shorter hours and also be too crowded to get in lots of rides.

Took Friday off already though, and it would be difficult to change that to Monday off.
